Reflect Upon
Igneous Rock
1. Granite- People have used granite for thousands of years. It is used as a construction material, a
dimension stone, an architectural stone, a decorative stone, and it has also been used to manufacture
a wide variety of products. Granite is used in buildings, bridges, paving, monuments, and many other
exterior projects. Indoors, polished granite slabs and tiles are used in countertops, tile floors, stair
treads and many other design elements. Granite is a prestige material, used in projects to produce
impressions of elegance and quality.

2. Basalt- is used for a wide variety of purposes. It is most commonly crushed for use as an aggregate in
construction projects. Crushed basalt is used for road base, concrete aggregate, asphalt pavement
aggregate, railroad ballast, filter stone in drain fields, and may other purposes. Basalt is also cut into
dimension stone. Thin slabs of basalt are cut and sometimes polished for use as floor tiles, building
veneer, monuments, and other stone objects.

3. Diorite- It is used as a drainage stone and for erosion control. In the dimension stone industry, diorite
is often cut into facing stone, tile, ashlars, blocking, pavers, curbing, and a variety of dimension stone
products. These are used as construction stone, or polished and used as architectural stone.

Metamorphic rock
1. Marbles- are used principally for buildings and monuments, interior decoration, statuary, table tops,
and novelties.

2. Gneiss usually does not split along planes of weakness like most other metamorphic rocks. This
allows contractors to use gneiss as a crushed stone in road construction, building site preparation, and
landscaping projects. gneiss is durable enough to perform well as a dimension stone. These rocks are
sawn or sheared into blocks and slabs used in a variety of building, paving, and curbing projects.
gneiss accepts a bright polish and is attractive enough for use as an architectural stone. Beautiful floor
tiles, facing stone, stair treads, window sills, countertops, and cemetery monuments are often made
from polished gneiss

3. Phyllite is a foliated metamorphic rock rich in tiny sheets of sericite mica. Phyllite is a durable and soft
rock and used as decorative aggregates, floor tiles, and as exterior building, or facing stone. The other
uses include cemetery markers, commemorative tablets, creative artwork, and writing slates.

Sedimentary Rocks
1. Sandstone is used in the building of homes and outdoor structures, as well as gates or as support for
columns on porches. It can be used to build outdoor ovens, fireplaces, patios or porches, retaining
walls and walkways. You can find outdoor furniture, such as garden benches or patio tables, made of
the material.

2. Shale is commercially important. It is used to make brick, pottery, tile, and Portland cement. Natural
gas and petroleum may be extracted from oil shale.

3. Pebble stone- Beach and river pebbles are also used to create water-smart gardens in areas where
water is scarce. Small pebbles are also used to create living spaces and gardens on the rooftops of
buildings. Indoors, pebbles can be used as bookends and paperweights. Large pebbles are also used
to create "pet rocks" for children.
