Module 2
Week 3 - 5
Introduction
The internet keeps people in touch with the rest of the world.
Initially, one would only know the stories that the mainstream
media reported. Now, however, people get to learn about
different countries and people across the world directly from the
source. The internet exposes people to the world without filters or
boundaries, allowing them to develop informed opinions. But
have you ever wondered how we connect to the internet?
internet setup or
topology that uses lan
cables to connect
computers in the
network
Types of wired network topologies (old)
2 Types
Full mesh
or
Partially Mesh
Mesh Topology
In this type of topology, a host is connected to one or
multiple hosts. This topology has hosts in point-to-point
connection with every other host or may also have hosts
which are in point-to-point connection to few hosts only.
Types of wired network topologies (New)
Star Topology
All hosts in Star topology are connected to a central
device, known as hub device, using a point-to-point
connection.
Types of wired network topologies (New)
Hybrid Topology
A network structure whose design contains more than
one topology is said to be hybrid topology. Hybrid topology
inherits merits and demerits of all the incorporating
topologies.
Types of wired network topologies (New)
Tree Topology
Also known as Hierarchical Topology, this is the
most common form of network topology in use
presently. This topology imitates as extended Star topology
and inherits properties of bus topology.
2. WIRELESS Connections
Wireless means
transmitting signals
using
radio waves as the
medium instead of
wires.
Issues with Wireless Networks
There are following three major issues with Wireless Networks.
a. Quality of Service (QoS) − One of the primary concerns about wireless data
delivery is that, unlike the Internet through wired services, QoS is inadequate. Lost
packets and atmospheric interference are recurring problems of the wireless
protocols.
a. Security Risk − This is another major issue with a data transfer over a wireless
network. Basic network security mechanisms like the service set identifier (SSID)
and Wireless Equivalency Privacy (WEP); these measures may be adequate for
residences and small businesses, but they are inadequate for the entities that
require stronger security.
a. Reachable Range − Normally, wireless network offers a range of about 100 meters
or less. Range is a function of antenna design and power. Now a days the range of
wireless is extended to tens of miles so this should not be an issue any more.
Types of wireless network topologies
Point-to-point bridge
As you know, a bridge is used to
connect two networks. A point-
to-point bridge interconnects
two buildings having different
networks
For example, a wireless LAN bridge can
interface with an Ethernet network directly
to a particular access point (as shown in the
following image).
Types of wireless network topologies
Point-to-multipoint bridge
This topology is used to connect
three or more LANs that may be
located on different floors in a
building or across buildings(as
shown in the following image).
