Title: Challenges in teaching English faced by English teachers at MTsN Taliwang, Indonesia

Argument: The study captured the English teachers’ point of view in facing English teaching challenges
in the classroom and the solutions they implemented to solve them through interview. A number of
challenges emerged, partly coming from students, partly from teachers, and partly from the school’s
facility, namely, students’ lack of vocabulary mastery, students’ low concentration, students’ low
motivation, students’ lack of discipline, students’ boredom, speaking problem, shortage of teachers’
training, teachers’ language proficiency issue, limited mastery of teaching methods, teachers’
unfamiliarity to high-tech, teachers’ lack of professional development, inadequate resources and facilities,
and time constraint.

Title: The influence of the first language (Arabic) on learning English as a second language in Jordanian
schools, and its relation to educational policy: Structural errors

Argument: This study was conducted to investigate the influence of the L1 (first language)(Arabic) on
learning ESL (English as a second language) in Jordanian schools, and its relation to education policy.
The sample of the study consisted of 266 high school graduates Jordanian students in the academic year
2013-2014. A translation test consisted of 24 items and divided to eight areas was constructed to arrive at
the objectives of the study. The study concluded that the percentage of total errors committed by the study
sample in all areas exceeds percentage of correct answers (wrong answers is 52.48%, correct answers is
47.52%), and the students committed more transfer errors in the types of verb to be, addition to, and
passive voice than other types of errors as a result of the effect of the L1.

Title: A review of first-language influence on the development of English-as-a-second-language spelling

skill

Argument: This research agenda is how ESL learners apply first-language knowledge to learning to spell
in English. Evidence was found for both positive and negative transfer of first-language knowledge and
processes to ESL learners’ English spelling. These results are in agreement with theoretical propositions
about the interdependence between first- and second-language academic skills [e.g., Cummins, J. (1981).
In California State Department of Education (Ed.), Schooling and language minority students: A
theoretical framework (pp. 3–49). Los Angeles: Evaluation, Dissemination, and Assessment Center,
California State University, Los Angeles]. The findings are discussed in relation to the ESL learner’s first-
language proficiency level and distance between first language and English. Comparisons are drawn
between ESL learners’ and English monolinguals’ spelling development and suggestions for future
research are provided.

Title: How does the first language have an influence on language learning?

Argument: Contrastive analysis (CA) and error analysis (EA) are effective ways to study and understand
how the first language (L1) of a learner might have an influence on the learning process in a foreign
language. In this particular case study, it was found that this Saudi Arabian learner had a better
performance in receptive skills; there were some evidences of U shape learning in this learner and also it
was noticed that his handwriting and the use of punctuation marks although good, they needed some
improvement.

Title: Implications of Parents' Socio-Economic Status in the Choice of English Language Learning
Strategies among Nigeria's Secondary School Students

Argument: Less affluent families are less likely to have the financial and or time availability to provide
their children with academic support compared to affluent families.
