• Due to the varying altitude from the Himalayas
to the coastal plains, the flora and fauna of
West Bengal is diverse.
• World's largest mangrove forest Sundarbans
famous for sundari trees is located in southern
West Bengal.

• The predominant commercial tree species
found in West Bengal is Sal.
• The coastal region exhibits coastal vegetation;
the predominant tree is the Casuarina.
• In hilly regions, oaks, conifers, and
rhododendrons are seen.

• There are five national parks in West Bengal —
Sundarbans National Park, Buxa Tiger
Reserve, Gorumara National Park, Neora
Valley National Park and Singalila National
Park.
• The Sundarbans are noted for a reserve project
conserving Bengal tigers.

• They also host other species like Gangetic
dolphin, river terrapin, estuarine crocodile etc.
• Other wildlife includes the Indian rhinoceros,
Indian elephants, deer, bison, leopards, gaur,
and crocodiles.
• The state is also rich in bird life. Migratory

• Vegetation is scanty in the Ladakh desert.
There are scanty patches of grasses and shrubs.
• Groves of willows and poplars are seen in the
valleys.
• During summers, fruit trees such as apples,
apricots and walnuts grow.

species found in the Himalayas.
• Hemis National Park is the largest national
park in India.
• Several species of birds like, are found here.
• The animals found here are snow leopard,
wild goats and sheep, yak etc.
