5E Lesson Plan

Changes the materials undergo

Teacher: Mrs. Cleslie Joy Carascal

Date: October 30, 2021
Dubject area / grade level: Grade 3
Materials:
 Pan
 Candle
 Moth Balls
 Plastic
 water
Lesson objective:
 Describe changes in the materials due to the effect of temperature such as solid to liquid; liquid to
solid; liquid to gas; and solid to gas.
Differentation strategies to meet diverse learners needs:
 Flexible grouping. Students are divided into 4 groups of 5-6 students for this learning experience.
ENGAGEMENT:
 Give students a formative mini-assessment regarding their understanding of 3 states of matter.
 Give students 3-5 minutes of free play in their groups with instruction for the group to work together
and create
EXPLORATION:
 Student will conduct some experiment about the changes materials udergo due to the effect of
temperature on how solid turn into liquid; liquid into solid; liquid into gas; or solid into gas.

Group #1: Experiment (Solid to liquid)

 Prepare a candle and it will light a fire
 Observe what happen

Group #2: Experiment (Liquid to solid)

 Prepare a plastic filled with water and place it on the fridge
 After a day observe what happen

Group #3: Experiment (Liquid to gas)

 Prepare a pan filled with water and boiling it
 Observe what happen

Group #4: Experiment (Solid to gas)

 Prepare a moth balls and place it in the cabinet
 After a day observe what happen
EXPLANATION
Each group will present the result on their experiment.

Group 1
 The candle is a solid material at first liquefied because of the heat when it lights up.
 The properties that have changed in this material are the size, shape and texture.
 This materials melts when they reached melting point.
 The melting the change in the state of matter is from solid to liquid and physical properties that
change include their size, shape and texture.
Group 2
 When materials undergo freezing it turns from liquid into solid
 In our experiment water is a liquid substance at first turned into ice which is a solid material when the
water reached is a feezing point inside the freezer.
 The physical properties that changed in our experiment include size, shape and texture

Group 3
 When materials undergo evaporation it turns from liquid into gas
 In our experiment water which is a liquid substance at first turned into gas when it absorbed heat
coming from the fire in the gas tube
 The physical properties that changed in our experiment include its size, shape and texture
 Boiling is one of the processes where we can obseve evaporation
 The temperature at which water boils and turns into gas is at 100 degrees celsius

Group 4
 When material undergo sublimation it turns from solid into gas
 This changes in state of matter is due to heat energy that can absorbs solid material coming from the
environment which causes its particles to disintegrate which the solid turned into gas
 The properties that changed in their experiment including size, shape and texture
ELABORATION
 Have a students identify questions they have related to the conduct experiment
 Have a students identify other things that could be studied to help develop themselves
EVALUATION
Choose the correct terminology that fit in the situation

Melting Evaporation
Freezing Sublimation

1st Situation:
Sophia was cooking her favorite recipe and the first step she took was melting butter in the pan.

2nd Situation
Ivan put moth balls in his closet because it has a siverfish.

3rd Situation
Chloe heated the water because she make a coffee

4th Situation
Julius made ice to sell
