Tutorial Solutions – Week 5

Example problem 1
The engine hoist is used to lift the 200 kg engine. Identify any two force members. Determine
the force acting in the hydraulic cylinder AB and the moment produced by the fixed joint at
D.

The first step in this problem is to analyse the to section (GAC). This will allow us to determine
the reaction forces at joint C and the force in the two force member AB. In the FBD below,
the black arrows are the assumed direction, the red are the actual direction after being
calcuated.

𝐶𝑦 = 7000𝑁 ↓ 𝐶𝑥 = 2166𝑁 →
z
For the next section, we will still draw the reaction of the joints at C as opposite of the black
arrows. In doing this we are able to directly take the values (even negative) when continuing
the question. To determein the moment at D, the distance of AB and C to D will need to be
found

Example problem 2
Determine the horizontal and vertical components of force at pins B and the reactions at the
fixed support D of the three member frame.

To determine the forces at be we will need to analyse the top section AB. Then we are able
to find the vales of the fixed support by taking the moment around D.

Practice problem 1
Determine the force that the jaws (J) of the metal cutters exert on the smooth cable (C) if
200N forces are applied to the handles. The jaws are pinned at E and A, and D and B. There is
also a pin at F.

This machine is symmetrical, as such we will only need to analyse one half. Typically, we would
start at the handle, but it actually makes it easier to start section CEA.

From looking at the above FBD’s we can see that to determine the force at C, we will need to
know Ax, Ay and FDE. However, by looking at section CEA, we can determine that force Ax is
going to be 0 by taking the sum of the force in the x direction. Now, we are able to look at
section AF and take the moment around point F, we can calcuate Ay and from there
determine the force at C.
