Environment can be defined as a sum total
of all the living and non-living elements and
their effects that influence human life. While
all living or biotic elements are animals,
plants, forests, fisheries, and birds, non-
living or abiotic elements include water,
land, sunlight, rocks, and air

Environmental issues :

A variety of environmental problems now affect our

entire world. As globalization continues and the earth’s
natural processes transform local problems into
international issues, few societies are being left
untouched by major environmental problem

Some of the largest problems now affecting the world

are: Acid Rain, Air Pollution, Global Warming,
Hazardous, Overpopulation, Ozone, smog, Water
Pollution and Rain Forest Destruction .

Acid rain: Acid rain, or acid deposition, is a
broad term that includes any form of precipitation
with acidic components, such as sulfuric or nitric
acid that fall to the ground from the atmosphere
in wet or dry forms

Acid rain results when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and

nitrogen oxides (NOX) are emitted into the
atmosphere and transported by wind and air
currents. The SO2 and NOX react with water, oxygen
and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids.

Effect on plants: Acid rain can be extremely
harmful to forests. Acid rain that seeps into the
ground can dissolve nutrients, such as
magnesium and calcium, that trees need to be
healthy. Acid rain also causes aluminum to be
released into the soil, which makes it difficult for
trees to take up water.

Dead or dying trees are a common sight in areas

effected by acid rain. Acid rain leaches aluminum
from the soil. That aluminum may be harmful to
plants as well as animals.
Effect on building: When acid rain and dry
acidic particles fall to earth, the nitric and sulfuric
acid that make the particles acidic can land on
statues, buildings, and other manmade
structures, and damage their surfaces.

Air pollution: Clean air is everyone’s business and

air pollution is preventable. The solutions to this pressing issue are
also key to tackling the climate crisis, fostering inclusive societies and
improving childhood development. By working together, we have a
golden opportunity to transform our approach to one of the great
hidden killers.

AIR Pollution solution:

 Minimize air pollution from cars.
 Walk, bike or use public transportation.
 Save energy.
 Maintain your wood stove or fireplace.
 Recycle & buy recycled products.
 Consume less & choose sustainable products.
 Eat local, organic produce & less meat.
 Grow your own food

Global Warming: Climate change refers
to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather
patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the
1800s, human activities have been the main driver
of climate change, primarily due to the burning of
fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and gas), which produces
heat-trapping gases.

GLOBAL WARMING effect: Warmer

temperatures over time are changing weather
patterns and disrupting the usual balance of nature.
This poses many risks to human beings and all other
forms of life on Earth.

causes of global warming:
. Temperatures in many countries are getting beyond 45 degrees Celsius, highest
ever on record since 1880. Such extreme temperatures are also killing people.

The hot weather also leads to other serious consequences, such as glacial
melting.

Melting glaciers in the North and South poles and Himalayas are contributing to
sea level rise and flooding. Coastal cities, ranging from America to Asia, are
drowning as a result

SOLUTION OF GLOBAL WARMING

Drive less
Walk, bike, carpool or take mass transit more often. You'll save one pound of carbon dioxide for
every mile you don't drive!

Recycle more
You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household
waste

Plant a tree
A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

Turn off electronic devices

Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer, when you're not using
them, will save you thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
