SECTION 07 84 00 - FIRE STOPPING

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION

A. All structural gaps, movement joints, expansion joints in floors, and in fire compartment walls
within each floor, which are designed to withstand structural movement, seismic movement
or thermal expansion & contraction, shall be fully sealed with a tested and approved
proprietary fire resisting seal, to resist the passage of fire and smoke.

B. All mechanical, electrical, and plumbing & drainage services passing through openings in
floors and through fire compartment walls within each floor shall be fully sealed to the
opening with tested and approved proprietary fire stopping materials to resist the passage of
fire and smoke.

C. Situations requiring the installation of such fire resistant joint seals for include typically (but
not exclusively) the following:
1. Walls terminating against the soffit of slabs or beams.
2. Structural expansion joints in floors and walls.
3. Joints between block walls and steel or concrete columns
4. Joints between adjacent sections of block walls.
5. Joints between edges of floor slabs and curtain walling members.
6. Gaps between fire door frames and adjoining walls.
7. Cavity wall voids.
8. Telecommunication work location shown on the Drawings.

D. Cables, Cable Trays, Non-Insulated Metal Pipes, and non-metal pipes of diameter less than
50mm passing through wall or floor openings: Where any such services penetrate fire rated
walls and floors, the gaps between the penetrating items and the structural openings must be
fully sealed to prevent the passage of fire and smoke, as defined in Paragraph 1.01 B above.

1.02 FIRE RESISTANCE PERIOD

A. Provide fire rating corresponding to the rating of structural component.

1.03 MATERIALS SELECTION

A. The fire stopping materials shall be selected to be the most suitable for each individual
situation depending upon the particular size, configuration of openings and ease of access,
anticipated movement, width, depth, and configuration of the joint gap, as recommended by
the Manufacturer, and to the approval of COMPANY Representative.

1.04 DESIGN

A. The design of each installation shall provide the necessary clearances to be sealed with the
approved fire stopping materials, between the penetrating service and the structural opening
in the wall or floor, to allow for ease of removal, repair, or replacement of the services at any
time in the future.

B. The detailed design of each situation, based on the width, depth, and design movement of
the joint gap as detailed on the Drawings, supported by the Fire Resistant Material
Manufacturer’s Technical Data and Independent Fire Test Assessments, shall be submitted
for approval by CONTRACTOR prior to the construction of the walls or floors requiring the
Joint.

C. All services shall be fully supported either integrally with, or within 250 mm of both faces of
the barrier, such that in the event of the fire causing the supports to collapse, the services will
remain suitably supported from the opposite (non-fire) side of the barrier, thus preventing
their weight from damaging the barrier.

D. The detailed design of each situation, supported by the Fire Resistant Material Manufacturers
Technical Data and Independent Fire Test Assessments shall be submitted for approval by
COMPANY Representative, prior to the installation of the services.

1.05 APPROVAL

A. All fire stopping materials shall comply with ASTM and UL 1479 Standards are to be
assessed and tested by an independent fire testing laboratory to the approval of COMPANY
Representative and are to have the approval of COMPANY’s Loss Prevention Department.

1.06 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. All fire stopping materials are to be manufactured under provision of UBC Section 706. All
materials are to be installed strictly in accordance with the manufacturers written instructions
by suitably experienced and qualified installers.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. The following recommended methods for Fire Stopping for each type of gap joint or service
passing through fire rated walls and floors shall be used. Where a particular configuration
requires a different method, details shall be submitted to COMPANY Representative for
approval.

2.02 MATERIALS

A. Joints and Gaps up to 30mm wide, where movement of up to +/-5% is anticipated: The joint
shall be constructed to the gap size as detailed on the Drawings and shall be fully sealed with
an approved proprietary fire resistant material tested to withstand the movement of the joint
and the fire resistance, as per Paragraph 1.04 above.
Install Fire Resistant Gap Mastic to the correct depth required, using foam backing rod to
control the seal depth as required for the Mastic. The face of the Mastic to be smoothed to a
finish approved by COMPANY Representative.

B. Install Fire Resistant Silicone Sealant to the correct depth required, using foam backing rod to
control the seal depth as required for the Sealant. The face of the mastic shall be smoothed
to a finish approved by COMPANY Representative.

C. Joints and Gaps up to 100mm wide where movement of up to +/-50% is anticipated or any
seismic movement is anticipated: The joint shall be constructed to the gap size as detailed
on the Drawings and shall be fully sealed with an approved proprietary fire resistant material
tested to withstand the movement of the joint and the fire resistance, as per Paragraph 1.04
above.

D. Install Intumescent Foam Seal Strip, pre-cut by the manufacturer to the required width and
depth for the fire rating specified, into the gap and bond into position with adhesive. The
Intumescent Strip may be located at any position within the full depth of the joint gap.

Where excessive damp conditions are expected in normal use, or where during construction
stage the strip could be subjected to wet conditions, (water resistant grade) may be
substituted.

E. Cables, cable trays, non-insulated metal pipes, and non-metal pipes depending upon the
particular size, configuration of openings, and ease of access, install either (a) Barrier Batts
50mm thick, pre-coated both sides with Barrier Mastic applied to seal joints between Batt
sections, around all edges, and around all penetrating pipes and cables for a minimum
distance of 150mm from face of Barrier Batt; or (b) Fire Stop Compound to a minimum
thickness of 100 mm by pouring into floor openings or troweling into wall openings.

F. Cable Trunking: Where closed cable Trunking penetrates fire rated walls or floors, the inside
of the Trunking shall have a proprietary intumescent sealing material installed around the
wires and cables to prevent the passage of fire through the Trunking,

G. Depending upon the particular size, configuration of openings, and ease of access, install
either (a) Intumescent Seal Bags of the most appropriate size packed tightly inside the
Trunking; or (b) Intumescent Foam Strip cut to the required size and fitted inside in layers to

pipe and the insulation butted against the fire seal, or a proprietary Intumescent wrap fitted
around the insulation to expand and completely seal the void between the pipe and the wall
or floor which would be left by the burning insulation during a fire.
Depending upon the particular size, configuration of openings, and ease of access, install
either (a) Barrier Batts fully up to the steel pipe and subsequently butt joint and seal the
insulation material up to the Barrier Batt, or (b) if the hole through the floor or wall is lined with
