Spectrophotometric analysis of aspirin

Aim:
To find out the amount of aspirin inside the pill using a spectrophotometer.
Introduction:
Aspirin is extracted from willow bark, and it is used as a treatment for fever, anti-
inflammatory, and pain reliever in an amount of more than 800 mg, and for regulating
sugar in an amount of (100-350 mg). In order to identify the percentage of aspirin
contained in the pill, we add Iron (III) ion on aspirin. The intensity of the color is directly
related to the concentration of aspirin present; Therefore, spectroscopy can be used. By
the Beer-Lambert law, which explains the relationship between the absorption and
concentration of a substance.
Tools:
spectrophotometer, balance, pure aspirin (400 mg), aspirin medicine, NaOH(1M) (10 ml),
iron (III) ion (0.02 M), graduated cylinders, volumetric flask (250ml), volumetric flask
(50ml).
steps:

1. Add 400mg ASA pure.

2. Add 10ml NaOH.
3. Heat until the substance melts.
4. Add water to 250ml.

Discussion:

I noticed that when aspirin was put with iron, it gives a violet color, and it was found that
there is a relationship between concentration and absorption, and when taking the slope,
the amount of aspirin was shown in the sample of unknown concentration. After
reviewing the results, we found that the amount of aspirin in the first sample was less
than what is supposed to be present inside the pill, which is 100 milligrams. For the
second sample, the percentage of aspirin was very close to the normal percentage found
inside the pill.
