 How might including culturally relevant texts in your classroom benefit your students?

We have a diverse group of students and based on what is already out there they might find more points of
connection and intersectionality within one another and bring new discussions into the classroom which
can lead to community if presented in the right way

What ideas or suggestions might you have to expand on the strategies presented?

I think asking the students on what they believe is important and culturally relevant in their life and how they
perceive it, so as the teacher we can take that, learn from it and also use it as a way to guide the lesson. The
questions in the beginning of the presentation to the students is really helpful. It allows us to get more
insight and I think being intentional and spending time in that space will only help set the stage to introduce
multiple culturally relevant texts that may apply to some students but not others – and have this accepted in
a positive way by the students that it might not be relevant too, but acknowledging that it can help us learn
from and about each other.

Incorporating culturally relevant text into the classroom is important because it allows students to feel
connected and seen. Through culturally relevant text students are able to make connections with the
readings and themselves or the world around them. This allows students to truly engage in the classroom.

I believe by including culturally relevant text in your classroom engagement will increase. Engaging
classrooms allow for the magic to unfold and possibilities become endless.

What ideas or suggestions might you have to expand on the strategies presented?

One suggestion might be to have a space for a collective sharing of resources. For example, having a google
folder where we each share different culturally relevant text we have brought to our students and share them
with one another as resources that can be leveraged in other spaces like study lounge.
