The Nervous, Reproductive

and
Endocrine Systems
* REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
FUNCTIONS OF THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM:
• Secretion of male sex hormones
• Production of male sex cells or
gametes
• Sustenance and transfer of sperm
cells to the location of fertilization
MALE SEX HORMONES
• TESTOSTERONE

• ANDROGEN

ORGANS INVOLVED:
• SCROTUM VAS DEFERENS URETHRA
• EPIDIDYMIS SEMINAL VESICLES PROSTATE GLANDS
• BULBOURETHRAL GLANDS PENIS
*FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
FUNCTIONS:
1. Secretion of female sex hormones
2. Production of female sex cells called
ovum
3. Sustenance of life by providing the site
of fertilization

FEMALE
REPRODUCTIVE
ORGANS
INVOLVED:
Ovaries
Fallopian tubes
Uterus
Vagina
Mammary glands
Female Sex Hormones
*Estrogen
*Progesterone

MENSTRUAL CYCLE – a process that occurs due to the shedding of the endometrial
lining.

3 PHASES OF MENSTRUATION:
1. menstrual flow – 1st to 5th day of the cycle
2. Proliferative – 5th day up to ovulation (14th day)
3. secretory - progesterone rises as the estrogen level decreases. The
endometrium thickens to prepare itself for the implantation of an embryo.
Menstruation

While the ovum matures and travels through the fallopian tube, the
endometrium grows and develops in preparation for the embryo. If the
ovum is not fertilized in time or if it fails to implant into the endometrium,
the arteries of the uterus constrict to cut off blood flow to the
endometrium. The lack of blood flow causes cell death in the
endometrium and the eventual shedding of tissue in a process known as
menstruation. In a normal menstrual cycle, this shedding begins around
day 28 and continues into the first few days of the new reproductive
cycle.
Pregnancy

If the ovum is fertilized by a sperm cell, the fertilized embryo will

implant itself into the endometrium and begin to form an amniotic
cavity, umbilical cord, and placenta. For the first 8 weeks, the
embryo will develop almost all of the tissues and organs present in
the adult before entering the fetal period of development during
weeks 9 through 38. During the fetal period, the fetus grows larger
and more complex until it is ready to be born.
*Neuroendocrine system
*A single system involving
the endocrine system and
the nervous system. The
male and female
reproductive systems are
regulated by the
neuroendocrine system.
