    Acid rain is caused when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides released from the burning of fossil fuels react with water and oxygen in the atmosphere to form acids. These acids fall to earth as rain, snow, fog, or dry particles which can damage trees and soils, kill fish and algae in lakes and rivers, corrode buildings and statues, and impact human health.
