MANNER OF ARTICULATION

PRACTICE 1
1. Voiced sounds are produced when the air is
when the vocal cords are together, the airstream forces its way through and causes
vibration.

2. Voiceless sounds are produced when the air is

when the vocal cords are apart so that air flows freely through the glottis into the oral cavity.

3. Nasal sounds are produced when the air is

when velum is up and blocking the nose so air escapes only through both mouth and nose.

4. Oral sounds are produced when the air is

when velum is up and blocking the nose so air escapes only through the oral cavity.

5. Stops are consonants produced with the airstream

when airflow is completely blocked in the oral cavity for a very short time.

6. Fricatives are consonants produced with the airflow

when there is a severe airflow obstruction in the vocal tract.

7. Affricates are consonants produced when there is a

when there is airflow blockage in the vocal tract followed by an immediate gradual released
of the closure.

8. Liquids are consonants produced with the airstream

when there is some obstruction of the airflow but not enough to cause constriction.

9. Glides are consonants produced with the airstream

when there is very little airflow obstruction in the vocal tract. Always followed by vowel and
not pronounced when they are the end sound of a word.
