Written Article Analysis

Is Body Shaming A Crime?

In the article, “Is Body Shaming a Crime?”, the author, Attiliya deals with the issue whether
the act of body shaming is right or not. The author gives an introduction by explaining the act
of body shaming and how the act has gotten out of control. She argues that body shaming is a
form of bullying which may lower the self-esteem of victims. Her assumption is that a person
should live up to the beauty standards to be socially accepted. Words such as harmful and
messed up reflect that bias language is used through the article to show the author’s tone
which is subjective. Her tone shows of her disapproval and concern as she attempts to
convince the general public about the negative impact body shaming has on people. The
author’s purpose of this argument is to explain why body shaming is a crime while pointing
out the negative effects it has on people’s mental and physical health.

She begins her case by explaining the act of body shaming generally to the readers to further
understand why body shaming is harmful to us. She then provides supporting details to
support her argument. One of the supporting details is research findings and it is expressed in
the article, “research also shows that body shaming does not motivate change and only makes
people feel worse and more isolated.” Another research finding is “research shows that health
does not deteriorate with weight gain unless it is very extreme and the person becomes
‘morbidly obese’.” Moreover, she also provided a testimony; “Additionally, one of the body
shaming victims said in the article that the downgrading criticisms only made her eat more as
that the only thing that makes her feel better.” These supports are applicable as the argument
is considered connected and related to it.

The objectivity of this article is to inform the general public that body shaming is wrong and
it should be stopped. The completeness of the argument is complete as the author explains
both how and why body shaming is wrong; and takes on other people’s opinion on body
shaming which is believing body shaming as a way to motivate people to lose weight, and
improve their health and quality life. However, the author disagrees with their understanding
as she said “proof revealed that body shaming weight discrimination made things worse and

will only lead to self-destructive behavior.” The author’s argument is logical, well-reasoned,
and believable, making it credible.

The stated main idea in this article is body shaming refers to an action or practice of
commenting, judging, criticizing, humiliating, or teasing others for their physical appearance,
especially their weight. As for the implied main idea, the author has made it clear that body
shaming affects the way people live and it must be taken seriously.

The author appears to use both inductive and deductive reasoning. The deductive reasoning is
shown in the first paragraph as it starts from a general statement or rule, followed by the
premises on which it is based. This is seen where the author states that ”For as long as you
have a body, the person is bound to be subjected to body shaming.” Other than that, she also
uses deductive reasoning in paragraph 4. She stated a general statement which is “…the
constant negative comments thrown to the victims has beaten them up emotionally and
physically.” And continued showing evidence from the National Health and Morbidity
Survey 2015.

Paragraph 2 however represents the inductive reasoning in this article. The inductive
reasoning gives out a general rule that body shaming is a form of bullying which may lower
the self-esteem of the victims. Furthermore, inductive reasoning is also shown in paragraph 5
where the author ends it with a general statement “…body shaming only creates more
problems.”

In summary, people are very used to body shaming others and themselves as they grow up
believing that it is for the sake of motivation. This is in fact a misunderstanding when we
want to critic others. Body shaming has changed the way people lived, which is to live in
cowardice of being judged by the others. People’s mental and physical health only
deteriorates when they are being body shamed. Therefore, people should give uplifting
criticisms instead to make a safer environment for everyone to be happier and healthier.
