Assignment

In my final design, I chose the

letter “O” to use because I was able to

utilize the symmetry and oval shape to

create the appearance of a can
being opened by the can opener. I used
the font Bodoni 72. I thought it was a

clever use of the letter, and the final

product was both legible and
recognizable. The O is still visible,
but simultaneously blends with the
composition. I think this design is
ultimately the best design of my many
drafts.

Final Design
Final Design Statement Initially, I was struggling with which
letter to choose bacause my oringinal design
was a can opener. This had me question if I
should choose a C or an O. I ended up
choosing the O because it fit more
seamlessly into my idea than the C did.

I played around with many concepts, but they

all were similar in which the can opener was
opening or cutting the letter. When I made
the first draft of what would become my
final product, I loved how simple and
effective the design was. It made sense to
use the O as the top of a can, and adding
extra elements to the O made the image very
clear.

I debated whether or not to add more details

to the can as I neared the end of my second
iteration of the design. I ultimately
decided to add a few more details. I did
like the more simple appearance before the
details, but since the can opener was also
very detailed I decided that adding more
would make the letter flow with the initial
design more.
Working towards a clean design was a
process that involved lots of
brainstorming and piecing together. Taking
the time to sketch multiple ideas and
creating multiple digital drafts were a
huge part of this project. I learned how
to combine image and type in an effective
way, and benefited from my many drafts and
extensive exploration.

I enjoyed discovering just how many pos-

sibilities there were to work from in the
project. Not only was there a diversity
in the letter to choose, there was an even
greater assortment stemming from that.

Overall, I am proud of this final design.

I believe that the letter is both legible
and recognizable, and the addition of the
can works well with the original design. I
learned about incorporating new elements
into my designs, and achieving a natural
flow between them.
