Assignment
Create a typographic design that helps your
audience visualize an onomatopoeic term (a word
that sounds like the thing or action denoted) by
using design and typographic attributes (such as
spacing, kerning, font size, orientation,
overlapping or elimination of typographic
features) to produce visual/verbal associations.

As I started this project, I

experimented a lot with the words I
wanted to use. I ended up choosing
slurp, buzz, squish, and crunch. I
didn’t have any particular
Statement

reasoning for choosing these words,

other than the fact that I was able to
come up with multiple deas for each
Design

word. I liked the variety I had to

choose from when it came to refining
my designs. I focused a lot of my
energy on assuring that the words were
recognizable and represented the
meaning accurately.

Final Design Statement
As I completed these designs, I played with the
negative space of the designs as I was arranging
the formatting. My first inclination was to put
them in the middle. It feels straight to the point
and direct. However, moving the designs around the
board allowed for more interesting and dynamic
desisgn. It is interesting how shifting a design
on a page can transform the way the design
interacts with the audience. This alone could take
a design from good to exceptional. My favorite
composition in this activity is the “buzz” desig
because thhe flying trail adds a lot of interest.

Reflections
Overall I learned a lot about Adobe Illustrator
through this project, and learned about how to
utilize word and form to create meaning in
design. I got very familiar with the
envelope distort tool, which I used numerous
times throughout this process. I am proud of the
finished product, though I do wish i could have
figured out a more interesting composition for
the word “crunch.” I feel that it is a bit
static, but stiull conveys the idea properly.
