Assignment
1. Symbol as Simplified Drawing
Examine the subject closely. Identify and render minimum
but essential details. Varying sketches will be
required for trying different angles and styles.
2. Symbol as Abstracted Graphic
Abstraction can occur through a process of simplification
or distortion in an attempt to communicate an
essential aspect of a form or concept. Abstraction is also
a visual representation that may have little
resemblance to the real world.
3. Logotype as Typographic Solution
A verbal symbol is a word (or words) representing an object
or concept. Explore what happens when you
manipulated certain parts of your letterforms to create vi-
sual illusions otherwise not available if one just
merely typed the word.
4. Combination Mark
Combined Marks are a combination of your verbal logotype
with your abstracted graphic symbol in a constant
spatial relationship.
5. Combination Mark in Color
Designed Combined Mark will be enhanced by adding color or
colors. Experiment different colors and color
tools (solid, gradient, pattern, etc.).
Deciding which animal I wanted to choose was

snail shell is distinct and holds many design
possibilities. I also liked the notable anten-
naes that snails have. Overall, I felt that
the snail was a good animal to choose because
it is unique and everyone knows what it is.

Combination Mark in Color

Through my logotype, I have worked to achieve a
simple, elegant design that reflects understanding
of shape and color. I chose rounded, smooth
shapes to convey a soft and inviting logo, and
manipulated my typeface to harmonize with my
chosen image.

The blush pink and red palette help communicate a

colorful brand that is playful while still being
refined. Because the shell of the snail is reminiscent
of a peppermint candy, inspiration was also drawn
from such colors.
Mock Ups
Final Design Statement
I am overall satisfied with how my design came out. I
feel that my design is simple enough to be able to be
scaled to different proportions and not look crowded or
overrun by unnecessary detail. I also think that it is
detailed enough to be recognizable. I used a combination
of smooth shapes and sharp lines to create an elegant
feel. The red and pink tones help to convey the idea of
the “peppermint” candy snail shell, which helps blend my
design atmosphere to match the idea of “Snail” being a
candy brand. I hope that the sleek design and warm col-
ors communicate an elevated sweets company.

Reflections
Through this project, I feel that I have gained a bet-
ter understanding of how to communicate a brand to the
public. I also learned the value of mock ups, and en-
joyed the process of learning Adobe Dimension to cre-
ate the mock ups for this project. I found it valuable
to seriously explore all the design possibilities when
sketching and diitalizing. Exploring the fonts and see-
ing which one matched the feel of what I was attempting
with my symbol showed me how important it is to choose
an adaquate typeface. Overall, I liked this project and
feel that I have strengthened my design skills.
