Title: The Behavior of Gases

Grade level: 9-12

Subject: Chemistry

Introduction:
In this web-quest, you will explore the behavior of gases and learn about the
factors that affect their properties. You will investigate the random motion of gas
molecules and how it creates pressure and diffusion. You will also learn about the
gas laws, standard temperature and pressure, and temperature scales. Finally, you
will learn about the kinetic theory of gases, the ideal gas law, and the laws of
partial pressures and diffusion.

Task:
Your task is to complete the following activities and answer the questions that
follow each activity. You may use any resources available to you, including your
textbook, notes, and the internet.

Task 1
Activity 1: Pressure and Collisions
1. Go to the following website: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/gas-
properties
2. Click on "Pressure and Collisions" and observe the simulation.
3. Adjust the temperature, volume, and number of gas molecules and observe what
happens to the pressure.
4. Record your observations.
5. Explain how the random motion of gas molecules and their collisions with a
surface create pressure on that surface.

Questions:
1. How does the motion of gas molecules create pressure on a surface?
2. What happens to the pressure of a gas when its temperature, volume, or number
of gas molecules changes?
3. How does the behavior of gas molecules explain pressure?
Activity 2: Diffusion of Gases
1. Watch the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRLNDTmBFZY
2. Go to the following website:
https://byjus.com/jee/diffusion-of-gases/#:~:text=What%20is%20Diffusion,atoms%20are%20uniform.
Read the section on diffusion of gases only (don’t read about rate of diffusion).

Questions:
1. How does the motion of gas molecules explain the diffusion of gases?
2. What is an example of the diffusion of gases?
3. How is diffusion related to the behavior of gas molecules?
4. Use an example to illustrate the diffusion of gases.

Write the answers of Task 1 (Activity 1 and 2) in a
