HYDROLOGY
● Before going into the depths of this topic (SuDS) it is important to
have a basic knowledge of the hydrologic cycle as well as the field of
hydrology itself

● One field of Civil Engineering that is gaining importance in the age of

sustainability is Hydrology

● Hydrology is defined as the study of the location of water within the

earth’s atmosphere

● As such, it deals with the origin, distribution, and circulation of water

in different forms and both surface and atmospheric locations
HYDROLOGY
● It is a multidisciplinary study that covers the following:

- Meteorology

- Agronomy

- Forestry

- Geology

- Hydraulics

- Oceanography
STATE OF WATER
● Water occurs on earth in three states:
– Solid
– Liquid
– Gas
In hydrology, it is important that water, in whatever state it is, must
be known where it occurs and how it interacts with nature.
● The simplest way to show the movement of water, in whatever
state it is, is by drawing the water cycle
HYDROLOGIC
CYCLE
COMPONENTS OF
HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
● The illustration can be summarized into two general components:
– Processes
– Storage
● The process components are:
– Precipitation
– Evaporation
– Transpiration
– Infiltration
– Runoff
HYDROLOGY
● The storage components in the hydrologic cycle are as
follows:
– Atmospheric Moisture
– Soil Moisture
– Storage on land surfaces
Water that were stored as part of atmospheric moisture are
in both gaseous (water vapor) and liquid (rainfall) state
Water that were stored on the ground and in surface
storage are in liquid state
