HYDROLOGY
The science dealing with the

o earth water,

and its
o occurrence

o distribution and circulation

o chemical and physical

properties, and
o interaction with the
environment

BRANCHES OF HYDROLOGY
WORLD’S WATER DISTRIBUTION

Gleick (1993)

HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
• The continuous movement of water on,
above, through and below the surface of the
earth.
• It consists of the following major phases:
i. Evaporation
ii. Transpiration
iii. Condensation
iv. Precipitation
v. Runoff

Summary
• Hydrology is the science in which we study the
waters of the earth.

• The oceans contains more water than all the other

reservoirs.

• The useable fresh water is very limited and mostly

locked up in glaciers.

• The hydrologic cycle is the circulation of water

above, on, through and below the earth via the
land, atmospheres and oceans. 9
