Future PLC

British media business Future PLC was

established in 1985. More than 50 periodicals
are published by it, covering topics including
video games, technology, movies, music,
photography, homes, and information. It is a
part of the FTSE 250 Index and is traded on the
London Stock Exchange. Chris Anderson established Future PLC in 1985 with the publication
Amstrad Action in Somerton, Somerset, England. They were the first firm to put free software on
magazine covers, which was an early invention. By purchasing GP Publications, it founded Future
US in 1994. The business produced Arcane, a magazine with a strong emphasis on board games,
from 1995 to 1997. In 1994, Anderson sold Future to Pearson plc for £52.7 million, but he later
purchased it back for £142 million alongside Future CEO Greg Ingham and Apax Venture Partners.
In 1999, the firm underwent an initial public offering. In 2001, Anderson departed Future. All three
of the major video gaming console manufacturers—Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony—had official
publications published by Future; however, PlayStation: The Official Magazine and Official Nintendo
Magazine stopped being published in November 2012 and October 2014, respectively. The
corporation went through a phase where it sold off several titles and abandoned print media
holdings in favour of digital ones. Guitar World and Revolver were among the American consumer
music publications that Future sold to NewBay Media in January 2012 for $3 million. It finalised the
sale of the main parts of its UK media-music brands to Team Rock Ltd. for £10.2 million in April
2013; however, after Team Rock entered insolvency in 2017, it purchased these back for £800,000.
Two Australian computer magazines, APC and TechLife, were purchased by Future in August 2013
from Bauer Media Group. As part of a restructure to "better effectively [adjust] to the company's
quick transformation to a predominantly digital business model," Future PLC is a cross media
company as it produces different types of media including print and online on all platforms around
the globe. Future is also a mass media company as they engage over 400 million people globally
through websites, events and magazines. Futures content reaches over 1 in 2 adults online and 1 in
3 in the US, meaning that the company is multinational.

techniques from the UK sport-fishing scene. Future PLC also owns a magazine in the same category
called Anglers Mail, the magazine covers aspects of modern coarse fishing, news catches and

the same target audience as both magazines are very similar and they are both about coarse fishing.
This makes the companies competitors as customers try to find the most interesting out of the two
magazines and this makes them want to buy the magazine making the company more money.
