1 Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
1. Search all publication formats appropriate to their project. [ABET 6]
2. Use search techniques appropriate to the type of publication. [ABET 6]

2 Resources
The tutorials that provide the content needed for learning. If you have any questions, contact Graham
Sherriff using his contact information in the syllabus.

3 What
Head over to the BME 187 / EE 187 / ME 185: Capstone Design website. You will find three tutorials that you
need to complete. There is a lot of information on this page that will be helpful when writing your Prior Art
Research deliverable later in the course. For now, just complete the tutorials. Your grade will be recorded
automatically. Each student is required to complete all tutorials. You can take the tutorials as many times as
you need.

4 Why
Part of the engineering design process is to understand the “state of the art” technology when solving your
problem. Existing technology or products, standards, patents, literature, etc. should be the basis of
understanding what is currently possible; what is legally protected; and how problems are currently solved.
The “state of the art” is not given in one location but spread across all different types of publications and
mediums. These tutorials will teach you how to search for different types of prior art that can be found in
different locations.

5 How
1. Visit the site: https://researchguides.uvm.edu/seed-fy23
2. Go to the Home tab on the left and select Required: Library Tutorials
3. Take all three tutorials quiz at the end of the tutorial. The tutorials can be retaken if you want.
a. Intro to Research Literature
b. Intro to Patents
c. Intro to Standards
4. Each tutorial will generate a certificate of completion that will be emailed to the instructors
automatically.
5. When you have completed the tutorials, head back to EduSourced.
6. Go to the Milestones tab and find the Prior Art Tutorials.
7. If you are the first member of your team to complete the milestone, the Milestone Status Icon will be
Incomplete. If another member has already completed the milestone, the Milestone Status Icon will
be Some Completed. Click the Milestone Status Icon and it will change to Self Completed. See
Figure 1 for Milestone Status Icon images.
8. You are done with the assignment

6 Rubric
You will receive one grade for your Prior Art Tutorial. The Prior Art Tutorial grade will be the average of the
highest grades for each of the three tutorials. We are looking for a grade of > 80% to demonstrate
proficiency. These quizzes are part of the Quiz Participation grade.
