Rationale
Introductory Message
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this
also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking
into consideration their needs and circumstances.
As a teacher, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
exemplar in the most fit modality. You also need to keep track of the learners'
progress while allowing them to manage their own learning through portfolio
assessments.
This exemplar was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while
2
being an active learner, either at home or in school. To help you with this, this
exemplar comes with a Weekly Portfolio Assessment. You teacher will provide
you with a template and you will be given a privilege to organize the portfolio
in your own creative way.
3
General reminders in using this exemplar:
1. Use the exemplar with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the exemplar. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the activities and
tasks.
2. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
3. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
4. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
5. Return this exemplar to your teacher or facilitator once you are through with
it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this exemplar, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher, parents, siblings or anybody
knowledgeable and older than you at home. We hope that through this
material, you will experience meaningful learning and gain deep
understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
In this exemplar, you will learn on how to find the nth term of geometric
sequences and the process on how they are generated. You will also learn
how geometric sequence applied in real-life situations. The scope of this
exemplar enables you to use it in many different learning situations. The
activities are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.
Sub-Competency
Calculates the specified nth term given the first few terms of a geometric
sequence.
4
Objectives
After going through this exemplar, you are expected to:
What I Know
A. Expand me!
Directions: Write the first nth terms of the geometric sequence
described in each of the following.
1. a1 = 3, r = 2, n = 5 ____________________
2. a1 = 2, r = 3, n = 4 ____________________
3. a1 = 4, r = - 2 , n = 3 ____________________
4. a1 = 11, a2 = 22, n = 4 ____________________
5. a1 = 2, a2 = 4, n = 4 ____________________
B. Find me!
Directions: Each term is multiplied by the same number to get the
next term. This number is called the common ratio.
1. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32,...
2. 6, 12, 24, 48,...
5
3. 3, 6, 12, 24, 48,...
4. 3, 9, 27, 81,…
5. 6, 18, 54, 162,…
What is It
In the previous module you have learned that, the term of geometric
sequence is in the form a1, a1r, a1r2, a1r3,……, a1rn-1 where,
an = a1∙rn-1
where:
an is the nth term
n is the number of terms
r is the common ratio
Solution
Identify the common ratio by dividing the second term by the first term, or the
third term by the second term, and so on,
8 16 32
a. r = 4 = 8 = 16 = 2
then to find for the 8th term without listing the whole sequence, use the general
form,
an = a1∙rn-1
a8 = 4(2)8-1 substitute n with 8, you are looking for 8th term,
a1 = 4, as the first term and r = 2
a8 = 4(2) 7 by subtraction (8 – 1) = 7
a8 = 4(128) by multiplying 2 seven times (2•2•2•2•2•2•2) = 128
a8 = 512 by multiplication 4(128)
Example 2: Find the 11th term of the geometric sequence – 40, 20, – 10, 5,…
Solution
a1 = – 40
20 −10 5 𝟏
r = – 40 = = −10 = − Given
20 𝟐
n = 11
6
1 11−1
a11 = (– 40)(− 2) by substitution to the general form
1 10
= (– 40)(− 2) Subtraction, 11- 1 = 10
1 1 10
= (– 40)(1024) simplifying the exponential form (− 2)
1 1 1 1 1 1 1
= (− 2)*(− 2)*(− 2) *(− 2)*(− 2) *(− 2) ∗ (− 2)*
1 1 1
(− 2)*(− 2)*(− 2)
1
= (1024)
𝟓

Portfolio Completion – Your Growth Clue!
You now go back to your portfolio and work on the other components that
follow your Goal Setting. Remember that your portfolio is a deliberate
collection of your works with the help of the exemplar. Highlighting your efforts
here enables you to see and reflect on your growth and achievement and
your ability to establish goals just to learn. Upon completion of your portfolio,
please be guided of the rubric below.
