IRREGULARITY Torsional Irregularity Exist

1. Torsional plan irregularity exists when the

maximum story drift including accidental torsion
effects at one end of the structure transverse to an
axis is more than 1.2 times the average story
drifts of the two ends of the structure. 2. Reentrant corner plan irregularity exists when
∆ B2 the plan layout of a structure and its lateral force-
existing system contains re- entrant corners,
where both projections exceed of the structure
∆ B1 beyond the reentrant corner exceeds 15 percent of
the plan dimension in the direction considered.

∆ B 2=¿ 34.08m

∆ B1= 26.20m
Sol’n: 4m 6m
∆ A=∆ A 2−∆ A 1
¿ 49.3−31.64
¿ 17.66 m
∆ B=∆ B 2−∆ B1
¿ 34.08−26.20
¿ 7.88 m
∆ A +∆ B
∆ ave= 6 > 0.15(4 + 6)
2 6 > 0.15(10)
17.66+7.88
¿ 6 > 1.5 therefore:
2 Re-entrant Irregularity Exist
¿ 12.77 m

∆ A should be> ∆ 1.2(∆ ave )

∆ A=17.66 ? ∆1.2 ( 12.77 )
3. Diapragm Discontinuity Irregularity Exists
when diaphragms have abrupt discontinuities or
variations in stiffness, including cut out or open
areas greater than 50 percent of the gross enclosed
areas or changes in effective stiffness of more
than 50 percent of the next story.

4. Out of plane offset irregularity exists when
Area Open(Ao)=7 m x 7 m there are discontinuities in a lateral force path.
Areaopen=49 sqm The shearwall from the 2 nd floor, Line E, changes to
Line D in the ground floor, hence, irregularity exists.

5. Nonparallel

Area Enclosed( Ae)=8 m x 10 m

Area enclosed=80 sqm
Area Open ( Ao ) >0.5( Area Enclosed ( Ae ) )

49 sqm>0.5 ( 80 sqm )
49 sqm>40 sqm elements are not parallel or symmetric about the
Therefore: major orthogonal axes of the buildings.
