Lesson
Communication, Media, and Information
1
Communication is affected by media and information. These pieces of
information affect the way people act, behave, and make decisions in their everyday
lives. Since the media is the main platform where we basically get information about
things and events that happen around us, we need to maximize its potential towards
achieving better and effective communication.

What’s In

Analyze the picture below. Then, answer the

following questions in your answer sheet.

1. What is the picture all about?

2. What message does the quotation
convey?
3. Why do you think Albert Einstein said
that there will be generations of idiots
in the future?

What’s New

In this module, we will discuss how communication is affected by media and

information. As today‟s generation is so dependent on social media, it affects how
we communicate and share our thoughts and ideas. It gave us opportunities to make
contact with our distant relatives and friends. It created a borderless communication.

However, how we understand the message communicated to us is influenced

greatly by what kind of medium is used. It gave us opportunities to communicate
even in the furthest side of the world and yet the ones we are with are not even open
to have a personal communication. On that note, it is important to understand what
communication is, decide on the medium you are going to use to convey your
message, choose intimate communication rather than being too dependent of
technology and media.

What is It

Discussion
Communication is the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or
behaviours to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts,
feelings, etc., to someone else. It is also the exchange of information and the
expression of feeling that can result in understanding.

Analyze the picture below. Then, answer the questions that follow. Write your
answer in your answer sheet.

What’s More

Independent Activity 1
There are two basic types of communication namely verbal and nonverbal.

Under verbal communication we have oral and written. While nonverbal

communication includes Signs, Symbols, Colours, Gestures, body language and
facial expressions

Analyze carefully this picture. Then answer briefly the given questions.

1. What types of communication are shown in the comic strip?

2. Using your prior knowledge, describe each one

Independent Assessment 1
Communication can be verbal or non-verbal. Non-verbal communication is
often more subtle and more effective than verbal communication and can convey
meaning better than words. For example, perhaps a smile conveys our feeling much
easier than words. Silent speech is of great importance in human‟s daily interactions
and it influences one‟s chances of failure or success in personal and professional
social encounters.
Today, media and the information we can access from it greatly affects the
way we communicate. As a result, we become dependent on it.

Analyze the questions below. Then answer them in your answer sheet.

1. Why do you use social media more than personal face-to-face communication?
2. Whom do you always communicate with using social media?
3. Have you experienced being misinterpreted? Why?
4. What might be the reasons why people sometimes misinterpret messages
conveyed through social media?
5. What are some ways to better express ourselves without being too much
dependent on social media?

Independent Activity 2
To better understand how communication works, we must learn the basic
processes by studying the flow chart that follows.
