OPERATIONAL MANUAL
SPS # 753-3, REV-0

INTRODUCTION

This is a Hydraulic Double Acting Actuating gate valve. This hydraulic gate valve is designed as
a fail-in place operator. These are used where complete control of the gate valve position is
required. This installation and maintenance manual gives factory required assembly, disassembly
and installation procedures, trouble shooting and technical specifications. The Hyd. Actuator can
be fitted to choke & kill systems, fracture application & other Drilling operations.

SAFETY NORMS:

• Always wear safety equipments like helmet, safety shoes, goggle and gloves.
• Only suitably qualified persons should be engaged in testing equipment.
• Be sure that the lifting and handling equipment can safely handle the load of equipment.
Always assume that something may break, never have any part of your body under the
suspended tool.
• All pressure gauges and measuring instruments are to be certified and calibrated by a
competent person.
• Ensure all pressure lines and fittings are in good, serviceable condition. Fitting failure has
caused injury in the past.
• Personnel should not enter the test area with pressure applied to the fixture.
• Any spillages must be cleared up immediately.

ACTUATOR OPERATION

Double-acting hydraulic actuator is operated by application of adequate hydraulic pressure to the

upper and lower side ports of the actuator. Hydraulic pressure on the internal piston will in turn
force the bonnet stem to either open or close the valve, depending on whether the valve is direct
acting or reverse acting. Proper amount of hydraulic supply needed per operation.

Double-acting hydraulic actuators are very similar to single-acting hydraulic actuators; the main
difference between them is absence of a spring in an actuator. As an alternative, Actuators have
two ports which can be used either as a supply port or an exhaust port. These actuators are made-
up of the following basic components in their construction: stem protector, indicator rod, piston,
stem, o-rings, seals and bottom plates with bolts for holding the actuators together. Furthermore,
the Actuators contain seals such as O-rings. The seals provide strength; low friction; wear
resistance; temperature changes; and the ability to form a tight seal; all of which make the seals
capable of withstanding hydraulic industrial application requirements.

1. Application & Characteristics

1.1 Scope of application

Valves, being full-diameter valves, designed & manufactured according to API Spec. 6A &
NACE MR 01-75 STD., boast simple & reasonable structure, reliable working, resistance to
scratches & erosion, & are also applicable to the pipes which contain dust or impurities.
The products are mainly used in the petroleum, natural gas & other oil (gas) wellhead
equipment, manifolds & other high-pressure pipes for opening or closing purpose (not allowed
for half-open throttling otherwise it causes damages to the valve.)

1.2 Structural characteristics

1. The gate & seat As well as inter-part of valve seat & valve body are all of metal sealing,
having higher performances against high or low temperatures, aging & corrosion than
that of rubber seals;
2. Positive metal-to-metal sealing (gate-to-seat and seat-to-body).
3. Two spring-loaded, pressure energized, non elastomeric lip seals between each seat and
body, which assist in low pressure sealing and protect against intrusion of particle
contaminants into body cavity and seal areas.
4. This valve is hydraulically operated, & the hand wheel is used for close locking, which

can prevent mis-operation; In case of emergency can be directly use the handwheel to
close the valve.
5. The rising stem has a balance lever structure, which can prevent the increase of inside
pressure during turning on or off.
6. The sealing between the valve body & bonnet is metallic, having 2,000-5000 psi working
pressure, using compressed metal gasket, the valves with 10000-15000 psi working
pressure use BX steel rings to achieve sealing.
7. Special non-elastomeric stem packing designs can extend the standard temperature rating
of the FLS Gate Valve up to 350o F (180oC), or down to -75o F (-60oC). These
temperature ratings may not be avail-able in all working pressures.

1.3 Operation & Use of Valves

1 Apply pressure at the upper part of the hydraulic cylinder, drives the valve stem to move
downward, and the gate valve is turned off, after the gate valve is turned off, lock the gate
turn-off position by turning the hand wheel clockwise, otherwise the gate valve is turned
on (Note: before turning on the gate valve, turn the hand wheel counterclockwise to ensure
the hand wheel is rest in the highest position).
2 In the valve working , it is prohibited to set the valve half open & use it as a throttle valve,
which may damage the valve seal
3 Hydraulic actuator’s working pressure is 1500-3000 psi, & strength test pressure is 3000
psi.

2. Maintenance & Repair

a. Periodic maintenance

A. Lubrication

1 Proposed valve stem & bearing lubricants.

a. For normal operation, common lithium grease can be used.
b. If working continuously below 0 drg. Fahrenheit, low-temp. lubricants are applicable.
c. The lubrication cycle is generally three months, if in the course of turning, excessive
operation force is found needed, the lubrication cycle can be shortened.
Note: For normal operating condition, Parveen recommends common lithium
compound grease such as EP grease (Lithox) can be used.

For continuous service below 0°F, use RS CLARE valve lubricant 601, suitable for –
20°F to +450°F & RS CLARE valve lubricant 501, suitable for –75°F to +350°F.
