History. (Minimum of 300 Words)

1. Why do we need to study Philippine History ?

To some of the students, Philippine history may not be as interesting as
other curricular subjects, yet some of us still argues that learning history is
fun and enlightening. Studying history is quite simply studying the truth. It
gives us the opportunity to find out what happened while trying to find out
why it happened. Thus, studying history allows everyone to seek the causal
relations between events.
This is even with the fact that learning history has its own limitations,
however, for although it can show us the right directions, it does not give
us a detailed information about what really are the exact happenings in the
past. But, studying our country’s history can show us what to avoid, even if
it does not teach us what to do – by showing the most common mistakes that
our ancestors apt to make and repeat during their respective eras.
As a Filipino, I am very much proud of our country’s achievements
throughout the history. Even though I was not a part of any of those
milestones, I am still honored and dignified to be called as a “Pinoy”. For
me, history’s meaning and value are contextual, that is, it becomes
important and useful to our society as it serves as our building blocks of
becoming a better citizen of a better country.

In addition, studying Philippine history is crucial because it is necessary to

look back in order to gain insight into how to deal with the present. We
must understand our origins in order for our identity as a community and a
nation to be based on facts and solid historical tradition. Therefore, by
understanding this, we may engage the present and the future with the
assurance that whatever mistakes our forefathers made in the past will not
be repeated in the future, and we can establish our own way of dealing with
challenges based on historical wisdom.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of studying Philippine

History?

History clarifies who we are and where we came from. Its comprehension
is critical for mapping our communal and individual futures. With that,
studying the Philippine History entails its advantages and disadvantages

Learning history teaches us about what goes into forming specific opinions
and causes for certain events, why some events are "more relevant" than
others, and how to prove a given argument in many methods. It has the
potential to elicit sympathy from students. Some aspects of our history that
we teach contain the sad history of ancestors during those years of wars and
colonization. Students will feel sympathetic to those countries if we teach
international history and they are aware of it.

However , having said its advantages, studying Philippine History also has
its own disadvantages. First, history can be interpreted in a variety of ways;
second, history can be misconstrued; and third, there will always be gaps in
history. It's an unfinished story. Just like what is happening right now with
the issues on the Martial Law.

Moreover over the years, history has repeated itself. For example, in the
past, there was a virus known as smallpox that wreaked havoc. Covid-19 is
now tormenting us. It has the potential to incite hostility. When we teach
international history, we often include wars that might lead to animosity
amongst the countries involved. We aren't always certain of the facts. We
must be certain of the facts when studying history.

Another disadvantage of learning our history is that some of us begin to

doubt historical facts. They might feel forced to do their own study of
primary and secondary materials. They will advocate for the study of history
over other academic disciplines. If, on the other hand, they did not acquire
a more active approach to history and instead learned a more dogmatic way
to learning history, most of them will be disappointed.
