WAVES CARRY ENERGY

• Rhythmic disturbances that carry energy without carrying matter are called
waves.
• You can see that the energy of the wave from a speedboat is travelling
outward, but the water only moves up and down.
• If you have ever felt a thunderclap, you know that sound waves can carry
large amounts of energy.
• What are the other instances where you observe a transfer of energy
through waves in daily life?
• Imagine a line of people.
• The first person in the line passes a ball to the second person, who passes the ball to
the next person , and so on.
• Passing a ball down the line of people is a model of waves can transport energy
without transporting matter.
• Even though the ball has travelled , the people in the line have not.
• In this model you can think of the ball as energy.
• What do the people in the line represent?
• Think about the ripples on the surface of the pond. The energy carried by the ripples
travel through the water. The water is made f water molecules
• It is the individual water particles that transfer energy,
just as people.
• The water molecules transport the energy in water wave by colliding with the
molecules
