Unit 4: Quadratic Equations

Lesson 3 - Graphing Quadratics using x-intercepts
• Compare the information you can get from quadratic relations of the form
y = ax2 + bx + c, y = (ax + b)(cx + d) and y = a(x - h)2 + k.

Which form is easiest to us for finding the vertex? the x-intercepts? the y-intercept?
How do you convert from one equation form to another?

Standard Form Vertex Form Factored Form

y = ax2 + bx + c y = a(x – h)2 + k y = a(x – r)(x – s)

must see ax2 and

x term

NOTE: “a” is the same for all three forms . Also, provides step pattern and
opening

Key ideas:

• The x-intercepts of some quadratic relations in the form y = ax 2 + bx + c can be

found by factoring.
• A quadratic relation can be graphed by using its x-intercepts.
o Let y = 0
o Factor
o Set each of your factors equal to zero and solve

• The x-coordinate of the vertex is on the axis of symmetry, which passes through the
midpoint of the line segment connecting the x-intercepts.
Therefore, the x-value of the vertex = (x1 + x2) / 2
To find the y-value of the vertex, sub the x-value of the vertex into the equation
and solve for y.

Ex. 3 Write an equation in Standard Form(y=ax2+bx+c) for the parabola which

has x-intercepts of -2 and 4, and passes through point (2, 16).

Need to write equation first in factored form then expand to standard form

Note: Use same approach above if given a graph

- Find an equation in factored form then
expand to standard form.
