Using Dalton's law of partial

pressures to relate mole

fraction and partial pressure
of gases in a mixture
Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures:

The total pressure exerted by a gaseous

mixture is the sum of the partial pressures
each individual gaseous component of a
mixture
According to this law, each gas behaves
independently.
Assuming "ideal gases"

The total pressure is dependent

only on the total number of moles
regardless of what type of gas
molecules are present.
MOLE FRACTION
The ratio of moles of one component of gaseous mixture to
the total number of moles of all components in the mixture
The MOLE FRACTION of one gas multiplied by
the total pressure is equal to a PARTIAL
PRESSURE contributed by that gas.
IF a mixture of gases contains 7.50 g H2 , 3.25 g O2, and
5.55 g N2 ,what is the mole fraction of each of the
gases?
7.50 g H2
x ________
1 mol H2
= 3.71 mol H 2
2.02 g H2

3.25 g O2 x ________
1 mol O2
= 0.102 mol O2
32.0 g O2

5.55 g N2 x ________
1 mol N2
= 0.198 mol N2
28.0 g N
2
nt = mol H 2 + mol O2 + mol N2
n t = 3.71 mol H2+ 0.102 mol O2+ 0.198 mol N2
nt = 4.01 mol fraction O2

mol fraction H 2
_____________
0.102 mol O2 = 0.0254
4.01 mol total
_____________
3.71 mol H2
= 0.925
4.01 mol total mol fraction N2
_____________
0.198 mol N2
= 0.0494
4.01 mol total
A mixture of gases in a sealed container has a total pressure
of 1.24 atm and contains 0.953 mol Ar, 0.0426 mol CO2, and
0.0175 mol H2 , what is the partial pressure of each of the
gases?

nt = mol Ar + mol CO2 + mol H 2

nt = 0.953 + 0.0426 + 0.0175
nt = 1.01 moles
