SUBJECT: Trip Report on a conference

MEETING PURPOSE
On Wednesday, March 8th, 2023, at 7:00pm, a conference called: “¿Qué me hace competitivo para
medicina?” was sponsored by the American Medical Student Association, University of Puerto
Rico Ponce chapter. This conference was given by former MD student and founder of
“Puertorromed”, Ónix Santiago Heredia, and was held via Zoom meeting. The main purpose of
this conference was to inform and advise students on different ways they can obtain a successful
acceptance in medical school.

HOW TO BE MORE COMPETITIVE IN MED SCHOOL


During his presentation, Ónix shared important factors students should have before applying to
medical school. This includes obtaining a great GPA and MCAT score, doing volunteer service and
shadowing, having letters of recommendation and being able to be a leader and work as a team.
He shared tips and tricks on how to maintain a high GPA score while doing the extracurricular
activities needed for your personal statement. Lastly, he mentioned the different resources that his
company offers to pre-medical students who need guidance in the process of applying to medical
school.

CONCLUSION
After attending this conference, I know what I need to have and what to do before my application
to my medical school of choice. Thanks to Ónix, I gained valuable knowledge that will help my
future self, whether it is during my undergraduate studies or my professional career.
