SCIENCE DICTIONARY
3RD QUARTER
Central Nervous System (CNS)-the CNS serves as the main prosessing center for the entire
nervous system. Brain -
This is an organ lacated within the skull that functions as organizer and distributor of information
for the body
Cerebrum – large ,upper part of the brain that controls activity and thought.
Cerebellum –the part under the cerebellum that controls posture, balance, and coordination.
Brain Stem –the part that connencts the brain to the spinal cord and controls automatic funtions
such as breathing, digestion heart rate, and blood pressure
Spinal Cord – This serves as a channel for signals between the brain and the rest of the body, and
controls simple musculoskeletal reflexes without input from brain.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) – The PNS connects the central nervous system to the organs
and limbs. Somatic Nervous System – This
system is associated with the voluntary control of body movements
Spinal Nerves – The nerves that carry motor and sensory signals between the spinal cord and the
body. Cranial Nerves – the nerve fibers that
carry information into and out of the brain stem
Automatic Nervous System – This system is associated with the involuntary control of body
movements Sympathetic – it is activated
when the body is in a dynamic role or stress.
Parasympathetic – it maintains body functions and restores the body to normal or relaxed mode.
GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Axon – the part of the neuron that transmits impulses away from the cell body
Dendrite – the branchlike structure of the neuron that extends from the cell body to receive an
impumlse Embryo – an organism in its early stages
of development , especially before it has reached a distinctively recognizable form
Endocrine Gland – an organ that produces chemical secretions released directly into the
bloodstream.
Egg Cell – also called ovum (plural ; ova ) ; the female gamete.
Fertilization – a process that occurs when the sperm and egg combine to produce an embryo.
Homeostasis – the ability or tendency of an organism to maintain internal equilibrium by
regulating its processes. Hormone – a chemical substance
produced in the body that controls and regulates the activity of certain cells or organs.
Impluse – an electrochemical gradient moving along a neuron.
Neuron – the basic unit of the nervous system , also called nerve cell, that transmits messages to
and form the central nervous system.
Semen – the ejaculated fluid containing sperm cells and secretions from the seminal vesicle ,
prostale gland. bulbourethral gland.
Sperm – shorter term for spermatozoon (plural: spermatozoa); the male gamete.
Stimulus – any factor in the environment that influences the bahavevior of an organism.
Synapse – the space between neurons where electrochemical signals pass.
Amino acid – the building blocks of a protein molecule.
Anticodon – the complement of the mRNA ; triplet code in the tRNA
Codon – each set of three nitrogenous bases in mRNA representing an animo acid or a start /stop
signal DNA -
replication – process in which the DNA is copied
Mutation – any change in the DNA sequence.
