CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Social media refers to websites and applications that are designed to allow people to share content
quickly, efficiently, and in real-time. While many individuals use social media through smartphone apps,
it all began with computers, and social media can refer to any internet communication tool that allows
users to share content and interact with others. According to Simon Kemp, in 2018, there were 3.196
billion social media users, a 13% increase year on year. In 2022, Kepios shows that there were 4.65
billion social media users around the world in April 2022, equating to 58.7 percent of the total global
population. Social media user numbers have continued to grow over the past 12 months too, with 326
million new users joining social media since this time last year (Digital,2018).

As the pandemic started, students' social lives have become increasingly reliant on social media.
That leads to having a hard time managing their time between doing schoolwork or scrolling through
social media. In many institutions, it is now recognized as a learning platform that improves student
involvement and capacities. These platforms allow schoolchildren to interact, communicate, and obtain
knowledge. Social media is the most powerful form of communication, allowing individuals to
communicate from all over the world. One of the driving causes behind these varying prospects and how
social media is affecting education is its adoption in daily life. This social media platform may benefit
students, especially grade 11 and senior high school students, but this social media can also be a
hindrance and result in something bad. They designed this study based on their own personal interests
and personal experience with social media, with the goal of providing information and knowledge about
how students deal with the effects of social media on their lives.

As a student that was affected by my time management because of social media, I can say that it
gives us a tough time. Especially between prioritizing schoolwork and doing stuff that is not so
important, like playing online games or scrolling through my social media accounts. We conducted this
study to spread awareness and open the eyes of everyone who thinks that relying on social media
benefits us big time. These social media platforms have become a way to identify and know the different
online games and sites that lead them into addiction on social media. And their addiction to social media
results in giving their full attention to doing not-so-important things rather than prioritizing schoolwork
that leads to having low grades. (Singh, 2021).

Students at San Roque National High School S.Y. 2022-2023.This study will answer these questions:
• What is the effect of social media on students’ time management?

• How does social media affect students’ time management?

• What is the effect of losing control over time management on students as they keep on using social
media?
