ESSAY: THE TEMPLE OF LITERATURE IN VIETNAM
The Temple of Literature is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hanoi, Vietnam. This
place is also a historical witness to Confucianism culture, which has trained countless talents for
the Vietnam feudal system since the 11th century. The Temple was established as the first formal
university in Vietnam. This was a determination to improve people's knowledge and the
country's education of King Ly Nhan Tong. This place represents the willingness to learn of
Vietnamese people and a great spirituality for those wishing to grow up on the path of
education.
The Temple has two main parts. The temple dedicated to Confucius (Van Mieu - 文廟) was built
in 1070 under King Le Thanh Tong, and the Imperial Academy (Quoc Tu Giam - 國子監) was
started construction at the same time in 1076, right next to Van Mieu. This relic complex is
located in the south of Thang Long Citadel, Dong Da district, Hanoi. The place has a total area
of 54,331m2; the four sides are surrounded by Hanoi main streets.

of worship for saints who founded Confucianism, and the first royal school of The Great Viet
with the first student was Prince Ly Can Duc, who was later King Ly Nhan Tong. After the
Imperial Academy was completed, this relic officially became the first university in Vietnam. It
was originally only for the children from elite families, then opened for other children who had
outstanding intelligence, came to study. Today, The Temple of Literature has become a historical
relic in the list of 23 special Vietnamese national monuments, a testament to the development of
Vietnamese feudalism's education, and is an attractive tourist destination. This place also
preserves valuable historical documents, unique architectural features, and traces of a flourishing
time of Confucianism in Vietnam.
