ECW 567 WATER AND WASTEWATER ENGINEERING

ASSIGNMENT
MAC – JULY 2022

Instruction: -

• This is an individual assignment.

• Submission is to be made individually via uFuture platform.
• Due date for the assignment is by the end of Week 7 (Friday, 20 May 2022, 5pm)
Learning Outcomes: -

• Able to determine water demand.

• Able to design Coagulation and Flocculation.
• Able to design Sedimentation and Filtration.

CO1: Calculate the sustainable water and wastewater treatment system.

PO3: Design solutions for complex civil engineering problems and design systems,
components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for
public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

Total Marks: 20%

1. Explain how the different source of raw water (groundwater and surface water) would
influence the required treatment process. 2 Marks

2. Town A requested for a new water treatment plant. The design flow for the plant is
0.1065 m3/s. with water temperature of 19 ͦ C. Design the coagulation tank by adopting
the following design assumptions:

i. Number of tanks = 2 tanks (1 tank as back up)

ii. Tank configuration = Circular (liquid depth = 2 x diameter)
iii. Detention time = 10 s
iv. Velocity Gradient = 800 s-1
v. Impeller type = 6 flat blades turbine, Np = 5.7
vi. Available impeller diameters = 0.45, 0.60, and 1.2 m
1
vii. Water depth below impeller = H
3

Determine water power input (kW), Tank Dimension (m), suitable Impeller diameter (m)
and the rotational speed (rpm). 5 Marks
3. Following the coagulation tank in Question 1, design the flocculation tank following the
design assumptions as below

i. Number of tanks = 2 flocculator trains (3 equal basin)

ii. Detention time = 2000s
iii. Velocity Gradient = 90, 60, 30 s-1
iv. Impeller type = 3 blades axial flow impeller, Np = 0.31
v. Available impeller diameters = 1.0. 1.5, and 2.0 m
1
vi. Water depth below impeller = H
3

Determine water power input (kW), Tank Dimension (m), suitable Impeller diameter (m)
and the rotational speed (rpm). 5 Marks

4. Three parallel flow flocculation basins are to be used to treat a flow rate of 3 MGD. What
is the design volume, in cubic feet, of one of these tanks if the detention time is 30
minutes? 2 Marks

5. Determine the number of rapid sand filters to treat a flow rate of 75.7 x 103 m3/d if the
design loading rate is 300 m3/d∙m2. The length dimension is 7.5 m and the length to width
ratio is 1.2:1. 2 Marks

6. Calculate the theoretical percent removal of a particle having a settling velocity of 0.25
cm/s settling in a horizontal flow clarifier with an overflow rate of 0.05 cm/s. 2 Marks

7. In a disinfection process, initial number of organisms is 250 per 100 ml of water sample
and reduces to 20 number of organism after 10 min of disinfection takes place. Assuming
the disinfectant is constant, determine the rate of disinfection. 2 Marks
𝑁
Given : ln = − 𝑘𝑡
𝑁0

No = Initial number of organism per unit volume
N = number of organism per unit volume after reaction time, t
k = first order rate constant
t = reaction time
