CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND THE LITERATURE

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Jeepneys are the poor-man's transport in the Philippines, from Batanes to the National
Capital Region (Manila) and down to Davao City, in Mindanao. Found only in the
Philippines, the versatile, durable and colorful jeepney is truly a mestizo - half-local and
half-foreign - reflective of the national character of this uniquely Asian country. Its
engine is imported, mostly from Japan, as "surplus" (second-hand) material. However,
its body or chassis is designed by artistic, Filipino autobuilders who adorn it with
variegated images, bouncing psychedelic colors and eardrum-breaking sounds. An
average jeepney can normally seat 20 adult passengers. But in the remote areas in the
countryside where transport is scarce, the versatile jeepney is typically overloaded.
Passengers often ride with non-human cargoes like farm produce, or even animals.

The jeepney, often called dyip (jeep), is an icon in the Philippines. This colorful ride is
the most commonly-used method of transportation all over the country. Be it in areas
as big and busy as Metro Manila or small towns and villages, commuters always
choose jeepney to take them from point to point as it is widely-available and cheap.
Naturally for locals , riding a jeepney is not a rocket science as it has been part of their
lives . But for first timer ,it can get confusing considering that jeepney comes in varying
colors and go on different routes

The most iconic transportation here in the Philippines. In fact, the Jeepney is often used
as a symbol of our “identity”. Jeepneys operate like buses, and you can determine their
routes by the signage placed on their windshield. However, given the lack of
jeepney/bus stops, you have to call the attention of the driver whenever hailing one. If
you intend to get-off the jeepney you need to say, “Para” which means “Stop”.

Significance of the study , Goal and Purpose

Goals

The main goal of this study is to showcase not only the negative effect of jeepney phase
out but also the positive .(1) is the effect in tourism (2) the impact in our society (3)What
are the negative effects of jeepney modernization,

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to conduct the effect of jeepney phase out in tourism Across
the levels of the economic strata and throughout cultural borders, all people express the
need for transportation. It is therefore imperative that the local modes and systems of
transport are improved holistically and be achieved under a culturally and economically
appropriate framework. However, the Jeepney Modernization Program is a clear threat
to the various facets of the jeepney industry. Drawing on government and NGO reports,
as well as other documentary sources, this paper examines the nature of current
modernization projects and the state of local modes of transportation with a primary
focus on the jeepney mode in the tourism industry. This research will identify potential
dangers in the implementation of a neoliberal brand of modernization and its
relationship with the continuing underdevelopment of Philippine mass transportation
systems. It is hoped that this research will encourage a process of rethinking the
modernization and a critical re-evaluation of the project to obtain the acceptance and
support of the jeepney sector. This study emphasizes the value of sustainable
development towards the marginalized sectors and demonstrates why the poor have a
right to mobility and livelihood. This study will give in to detail how the transformation
towards a greener, efficient, and effective jeepney system is possible with the help and
collaboration of the government providing technical, scientific, and environmental
support and the cooperation of the transport groups as well.

Conclusion

The jeepney, often known as a jitney or jeep, is a historically significant vehicle. The
jeepney, which is the most common and original form of public transportation utilized by
Filipinos, can be regarded as a sign of independence and Filipinoness
The jeepney phase out has an effect on our tourism because it is one of the most
protected resources of our country because it is the Filipino brand of transportation that
is our own. The Pinoy jeepney, like the country it represents, has endured the test of time,
but its survival is now threatened by new proposals from politicians to phase it out. For now,
however, similar to the resilient passengers it has carried for 85 years, this King of the Road
continues to roll on and rule the Philippine streets. The implementation of the modern jeep
from China has a big impact on our tourism as if all the goods and resources that were
bequeathed to us have been replaced by foreigners so that we can love and enjoy our
own. The Filipinos' joyful spirit and artistry are also shown in the Pinoy jeepney. Jeepney
manufacturers, such as Sarao Motors, hire "jeepney artists" to decorate the vehicles with
vibrant colors and artworks reflecting Philippine landscapes, life, and culture, ranging from
religious icons and insignia to tourism destinations.
