SINAMICS S120 DRIVE

High Performance SINAMICS S Converters are a Drive Range from Siemens with
Extremely Versatile Application Options.
The converters SINAMICS S are designed for complex applications in mechanical and
plant engineering as well as for a broad range of motion control tasks. The portfolio
covers a power range from 0.12 kW to 5700 kW, with products available in a variety
of designs and sizes. All versions share a distinctive feature: an absolutely uniform
engineering. These motion control drives include high-performance single drives and
coordinated drives (multiple-axis applications) with vector or servo functionalities that
allow implementation of customized high performance drive solutions.
The SINAMICS S120 drive system consists of a variety of different modules. It is
constructed of infeeds, filters, motor power units, modules for additional functions,
Control Units plus standard and special versions of rotating and linear motors.
In this course, we teach the know-how required for configuring and initial startup of
the SINAMICS S120 drive system. Practical exercises using a SINAMICS S120
Training Simulator having Booksize Infeed and Motor Module with Control Unit
CU320-2 DP are an important component.
On completion of the course, you will have mastered safe handling of the drive
through BOP and STARTER commissioning tool. This allows you to effectively use
different converter functions, optimize closed-loop controls, and thus achieve the
greatest possible success in operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of the
SINAMICS S120 system.

SINAMICS S120 DRIVE

Fundamental Operation with Frequency Converter

Converter: A converter supplies three-phase motor with a variable voltage

variable frequency to create a three-phase variable frequency current
through motor’s windings. For this purpose, the three-phase current
from supply system is rectified in the converter and a three-phase
current with variable frequency is created.

Frequencies: Depending on the speed setpoint that is input, the converter outputs
a frequency of 0 to 50 Hz. Higher frequencies are also possible,
depending on the motor and application.

Speed: In some applications, a desired frequency is specified instead of the

speed setpoint. Based on the motor data, such as rated current, rated
power and rated speed, the converter knows which frequency needs
to be produced and output to the motor.

SINAMICS S120 DRIVE
Modularity for machine construction
SINAMICS S120 is flexibly designed to support the modularity demands of machinery
construction. This encompasses:
 Single-axis drives.
 Multi-axis drives.
 Distributed multi-axis drives with the power unit mounted on the motor to minimize the
cabinet size.
 Motion control functions are integrated in the drive system (SIMOTION D)
With its separate power unit and control module (Control Unit), the SINAMICS S120 drive
system can be perfectly adapted to a wide variety of different drive tasks. The connection
between the Control Unit and power unit is made very simply using the digital system interface
DRIVE-CLiQ.
The following drive units are available in the SINAMICS S120 drive system:
 Power Modules (PM)
 Basic Infeed / Basic Line Modules (BLM)
 Smart Infeed / Smart Line Modules (SLM)
 Active Infeed / Active Line Modules (ALM)
 Active Interface Modules (AIM)
 Motor Modules (MM)

SINAMICS S120 Hardware Components

Power Modules

The simplest variant of a SINAMICS S120 drive system comprises a CU310-2

Control Unit and a PM340 Power Module.
The Power Modules are specifically designed for single (stand-alone) drives
without regenerative feedback into the line supply. Generated energy produced
during braking is converted to heat via braking resistors. A line-side rectifier, a
voltage source DC link and an inverter for supplying a motor are integrated as
one unit in the power module.
The Control Unit is plugged onto the Power Module; in addition to the complete
control intelligence, the Control Unit also has all the drive interfaces for
communication with higher-level systems and interfacing of add-on components.
Using CUA31/CUA32 Control Unit Adapters, the AC/AC Power Modules can be
integrated with multi-axis drive line-up using DRIVE-CLiQ connection.

SINAMICS S120 DRIVE
Line Modules

Basic Line Modules

Basic Line Modules are designed
only for infeed operation, i.e.
they are not capable of
recovering energy to the mains
supply. If regenerative energy is
produced, e.g. when drives optional
brake, it must be converted to
heat by means of a Braking
Module and a braking resistor. A
line filter can be optionally
installed.

Smart Line Modules

Smart Line Modules can
supply energy and
recover energy to the
mains supply. Braking
Module and braking
resistor are only
required, if, also for a
must
power failure – without
energy recovery option
– it is necessary to brake
the drives in a
controlled fashion.
When a Smart Line Module is used as the infeed, the matching line reactor must be
installed.

Prepared by: Sajit K. Sahu Page 7 of 54

SINAMICS S120 DRIVE
Active Line Modules
Active Line Modules can supply energy and return regenerative energy to the supply
system. Braking Module and braking resistor are only required, if, also for a power
failure – without energy recovery option – it is necessary to brake the drives in a
controlled fashion.
Contrary to the Basic
Line Modules and Smart
Line Modules, Active
Line Modules generate a
controlled DC voltage.
This is kept constant,
independent of any line must
voltage fluctuations,
assuming that the line
voltage fluctuates within
the permitted tolerances.
Active Line Modules draw a virtually sinusoidal current from the supply which limits
any harmful harmonics. All the components required to operate an Active Line Module
are integrated in the Active Interface Module.

Motor Modules
A voltage DC link and an inverter
for supplying a motor are integrated
in the Motor Module.
Motor Modules are designed for
multi-axis drive systems and are
controlled by either a CU320-2 or a
SIMOTION D Control Unit. Motor
Modules are interconnected through
a common DC bus.
One or several Motor Modules are
supplied with energy for the motors
via the DC link. Both synchronous and induction motors can be operated.
Since the Motor Modules share the same DC link, they can exchange energy with one
another, i.e. if one Motor Module operating in generator mode produces energy, the
energy can be used by another Motor Module operating in motor mode. The DC link is
supplied with line supply voltage by a Line Module.

Control Units
 The CU310-2 DP or CU310-2 PN for single axis (AC/AC) drives.
 The CU320-2 DP or CU320-2 PN for multi-axis applications.
 D410-2, D425-2, D435-2, D445-2 and D455-2 Control Units of SIMOTION D
for Sophisticated Motion Control tasks.

SINAMICS S120 DRIVE
System components
The structure of the drive system is defined by selecting the Control Unit and Power
Module or Line Module and Motor Modules. The additional components provided
allow optimum adaptation of the drive system to the application.
These components are subdivided into:
 Line-side components, e.g. Line Reactors, Line Filters, AIMs
 DC link components, e.g. Braking Modules, Braking Resistors, Capacitor Modules
 Motor-side components, e.g. Motor Reactors and dv/dt Filters plus VPL, Sine-
wave Filters
 Supplementary system components, e.g. Terminal Modules, Operator Panels and
Communication Boards
 Encoder system interface for connecting various types of encoders to SINAMICS
S120, e.g. SMC30, SME25 etc.
 DRIVE-CLiQ system interface: All SINAMICS S120 components are equipped
with the high performance DRIVE-CLiQ system interface. Line and Motor Modules are
connected to the Control Unit and Terminal and Sensor Modules to the drive system via
DRIVE-CLiQ – simply and efficiently. Motors that also have this interface can be
directly connected to the drive system.

operation (SERVO, VECTOR)
Sets the signal source for the
operating signal of the infeed.
The sequence control of a
servo/vector drive requires this signal.
When the operating signal is
transferred via BO: r0863.0 this
allows several drives to start (run-up)
staggered over time when they are
simultaneously powered up.

To realize this, the following

connections/interconnections are
required:
Drive 1: Internconnect BI: p0864 with
BO: r0863.0 of the infeed
Drive 2: Internconnect BI: p0864 with
BO: r0863.0 of drive 1
Drive 3: Internconnect BI: p0864 with
BO: r0863.0 of drive 2, etc.
The first drive only transfers the operating signal to the next drive after it has reached
its ready condition.

SINAMICS S120 DRIVE
Servicing & Maintenance
The devices comprise mostly electronic components. Apart from the fan(s), therefore,
they contain hardly any components that are subject to wear or that require maintenance
or servicing. Maintenance is intended to ensure that the equipment remains in the
specified condition. Dirt and contamination must be removed regularly and parts
subject to wear replaced. The following points must generally be observed.

Cleaning dust deposits

Dust deposits inside the device must be
removed at regular intervals (or at least once a
year) by qualified personnel in line with the
relevant safety regulations. The unit must be
cleaned using a brush and vacuum cleaner, and
dry compressed air (max. 1 bar) for areas that
cannot be easily reached.

Ventilation
The ventilation openings in the devices must
never be obstructed. The fans must be checked
to make sure that they are functioning
correctly.

Cable and screw terminals

Cable and screw terminals must be checked regularly to ensure that they are secure in
position, and if necessary, retightened. Cabling must be checked for defects. Defective
parts must be replaced immediately.

Forming the DC link capacitors

If the Basic Line Module, Smart Line Module, Active Line Module, and Motor Module
have not been used for more than two years, the DC-link capacitors must be reformed.
If this is not carried out, the units could be damaged when the DC-link voltage is
connected under load.
If the cabinet is commissioned within two years of its date of manufacture, the DC-link
capacitors do not need to be re-formed. The date of manufacture can be taken from the
serial number on the rating plate.
It is important that the storage period is calculated from the date of manufacture and not
from the date that the equipment was shipped.
Procedure in the event of repair or replacement (within the drive lineup):
A replacement Line Module or Motor Module or the corresponding replacement power
block has to be re-formed after being in storage for a period of more than two years.
The DC-link capacitors are re-formed by applying the rated voltage without load
for at least 30 minutes.
To do this, the DC link must be pre-charged (i.e. the Line Modules switched on), while
the controller for the existing Motor Modules must not be enabled for the specified
length of time.

SINAMICS S120 DRIVE
Procedure for re-forming outside the drive line-up:
Replacement power units which have to be held ready for immediate use in the event of
repair or replacement can also be re-formed individually and outside the drive line-up.
Components for the forming circuit (recommended)
• One fuse switch 3 AC 400 V / 10 A.
• Three incandescent lamps 230 V / 100 W for a line voltage of 3 AC 380 to 480
V. Alternatively, use three resistors of 1 kΩ / 100 W each (e.g.
GWK150J1001KLX000 from Vishay) instead of the incandescent lamps.
• Various small components, such as lamp sockets, cable 1.5 mm2, etc.

Forming circuit of Line

Modules:
Voltage must be supplied
to Line Modules via a
connected Motor Module
and the associated DC
link.

Forming Procedure:
• The unit being
formed must not
receive a power-on
command (e.g.
from the keyboard, BOP20 or terminal block).
• Connect the appropriate forming circuit.
• During the forming process, the incandescent lamps must become less bright or
go completely dark. If the incandescent lamps continue to be brightly lit, a fault
has occurred in the drive unit or in the wiring.

Troubleshooting: Faults & Alarms
Display of faults/alarms (messages)
The errors and states detected by the individual components of the drive system are
indicated by messages. The messages are categorized into faults and alarms. The
following methods for displaying faults and alarms are available:
• Display via the fault and alarm buffer with PROFIBUS/PROFINET.
• Online via the commissioning software.
• Display via Operating Panel (e.g. BOP, AOP).
Properties of faults and alarms:
● Faults
- Are identified by fault code like Fxxxxx.
- Can lead to a fault reaction.
- Must be acknowledged once the cause has been remedied.
- Status via Control Unit LED RDY.
- Status via PROFIBUS status signal ZSW1.3 (fault active).
- Entry in the fault buffer.
● Alarms
- Are identified by alarm code Axxxxx.
- Have no further effect on the drive.
- The alarms are automatically reset once the cause has been remedied. No
acknowledgement is required.
- Status via PROFIBUS status signal ZSW1.7 (alarm active).
- Entry in the alarm buffer.
● General properties of faults and alarms
- Can be configured (e.g. change fault to alarm, fault reaction).
- Triggering on selected messages possible.
- Initiation of messages possible via an external signal.
- Contains the component number for identifying the SINAMICS component
involved
- Contains diagnostic information on the message involved

Propagation of Faults
Forwarding faults to the Control Unit
When faults are triggered on the Control Unit drive object, it is always assumed that
central functions of the drive are affected. For this reason, these faults are also
forwarded to all other drive objects (propagation). The fault responses act on the
Control Unit drive object and all other drive objects. This behavior also applies to the
faults that are set in a DCC chart on the Control Unit with the aid of the DCC block.
A fault propagated from the Control Unit must be acknowledged at all drive objects to
which this fault was transferred. In this way, this fault on the Control Unit is
automatically acknowledged. Alternatively, the faults of the drive objects can also be
acknowledged on the Control Unit.

SINAMICS S120 DRIVE
Alarms are not propagated from the Control Unit, i.e. transferred to other drive objects.
Example
Drive object faults are only transferred to the drives, i.e. a fault on a TB30 stops the
drive -however, a fault on the drive does not stop the TB30.
Forwarding of faults due to BICO interconnections
If two or more drive objects are connected via BICO interconnections, faults of drive
objects of type Control Unit, TB30, DMC20, DME20, all Terminal Modules or
ENCODER DO are transferred to drive objects with closed-loop control functions, e.g.
infeed units or Motor Modules. There is no forwarding of faults within these two
groups of drive object types.

Fault Reactions:
1. NONE : No reaction when fault occurs.
2. OFF1 : Controlled stop along normal RDT and pulse inhibit at
zero speed.
3. OFF1_DELAYED : Delay time in p3136, remaining time to OFF1 in r2137.
4. OFF2 : Immediate pulse inhibit, coast to rest.
5. OFF3 : Controlled stop along OFF3 time and pulse inhibit at
zero speed.
6. STOP2 : Same as OFF3 except pulse inhibit not done after coming
down to zero speed, the drive remains in closed-loop
speed control.
7. IASC/DCBRK : For synchronous motors Internal Armature Short
Circuit/ for induction motors DC Braking.
8. ENCODER : The fault reaction ENCODER is applied as a function of
the setting in p0491. Default in p492 is OFF2.

Fault Acknowledgment (POWER ON / IMMEDIATELY / PULSE INHIBIT)

POWER ON: The fault is acknowledged using POWER ON (switch drive unit off and
on again).
IMMEDIATELY: Faults can be acknowledged on one drive object (Points 1 to 3) or on
all drive objects (Point 4) as below:
1. Set acknowledgment by parameter: p3981 = 0 --> 1
2. Acknowledging via binector inputs:
p2103 BI: 1. Acknowledge faults
p2104 BI: 2. Acknowledge faults
p2105 BI: 3. Acknowledge faults
3. Acknowledging using a PROFIBUS control signal: STW1.7 = 0 --> 1 (edge)
4. Acknowledge all faults across all the drive objects of a CU: p2102 BI
BOP reset is having default wiring to this binector input.
PULSE INHIBIT: The fault can be acknowledged with a pulse inhibit (r0899.11 = 0).
Note: • These faults can also be acknowledged by a POWER ON.
• If the cause of the fault has not been removed, the fault will continue to
be displayed after acknowledgment.

Alarm Buffer/History

Fault counter: p0952 Alarm counter: p2111

r0944 is incremented each time the fault buffer changes. r2121 is incremented each time
the alarm buffer changes.
Clear buffer
- Delete fault buffer for all drive objects: p2147 = 1 --> p2147 = 0 is
automatically set after execution.
- Delete fault buffer for a specific drive object: set fault counter, p0952 = 0. The
parameter belongs to the specified drive object.
- Deleting the alarm buffer, index [0...7]: The alarm buffer index [0...7] is reset
by p2111 = 0.
External triggering messages
3 numbers each of External Faults and External Alarms can be configured:

Once an external fault (1 to 3) has been triggered on the Control Unit drive object, this
fault is also present on all associated drive objects. If one of these external faults is
triggered on a different drive object, it is only present on that particular drive object.
