Carrier ECOS Overview
System Overview
With the migration of CANBUS to the carrier on Generation 2 GMK cranes,

we now have the ability to monitor and control carrier functions via ECOS.
We also have the ability to operate carrier functions from the cab of the
superstructure on some models.

System Overview
The carrier system has some

similarities to the superstructure
to include the use of ESX modules
and I/O boards or GVIOM modules.
Some Steer by Wire models (5220)
are equipped with dedicated ESX
modules for steering only.
Note: Steer By Wire ESX modules
CAN4 to S/S
are not interchangeable with
carrier or superstructure ESX
modules.

System Overview
Depending on the vintage and

model of the machine additional
modules are used to control or
communicate carrier functions.
These modules relate to engine,
transmission, braking and various
other functions.
Some cases require communication
from these modules to ECOS.
Module examples are:
ADM
AMG
FR
CPC
ABS

Module Overviews
ADM = Adaption module (Mercedes control module)

AMG = Adaption module Grove (Mercedes based module)
FR / FMR = cabin mounted engine control module: driver input ( throttle pedal,
cruise control, engine brakes, etc.) Mercedes controller
CPC = Common Power-train Control: replaces FR / FMR in cranes with Tier
3B emissions.
MR / PLD = engine mounted engine control module: controls injection timing,
engine sensors, etc.
GS / EPS = Mercedes transmission shift controller
ABS = Antilock Braking / Traction control module
WS = Maintenance module (not equipped on all cranes)
FS / FLS = Flame Start control (cold weather starting for Mercedes)

ADM Module Overview
ADM or Adaption Module is a Mercedes control module. There are several

variations of this module depending where and what model crane it is used on
4 & 5 axles carriers (non Mercedes cabin): with Mercedes engine + ZF or
Allison trans or Mercedes engine + Mercedes transmission….used to transmit
engine/transmission information to non-Mercedes dash gauges, indicator lights,
etc……may also be used for the “upper throttle input for driving” (ADM-2/FR) on
cranes that can be driven from the superstructure.
The ADM is also the “gateway” for the Minidiag diagnostic tool.
4 & 5 axle carriers (Mercedes cabin): do not require an ADM module as they
have the Mercedes instrument panel.
New cranes that have Mercedes engines (upper/lower) equipped for Tier 4
emissions will have an ADM 3 (replaces the ADM, ADM2/FR, FR, FR/CPC
modules) in place regardless of cabin style

AMG Module Overview
The AMG (Adaption Module Grove) is also a Mercedes based control module
used as a translation module between the ADM J-1939 CAN format and the
ECOS 2.0 CAN format.
There are 2 variations of AMG module:

1 for a Mercedes engine + a Mercedes transmission
1 for a Mercedes or a Cummins engine + an Allison transmission
On non Mercedes style cab model’s, the AMG module translates the information
about the engine/transmission so the ECOS display can show what gear is
engaged, engine RPM, temperature, etc. and allow for emergency shifting of the
transmission via the ECOS display.

On Mercedes style cab models, the AMG allows for the emergency shifting of
the transmission via the ECOS display.
On crane models with an Allison transmission, engine and trans information is

shown on the ECOS display via the AMG module.
On all crane models with twin engines the AMG module allows the carrier
engine to be started from the superstructure via ECOS. If so equipped it would
also allow for control of the transmission to permit the driving of the crane from
the superstructure.

engine, transmission, ABS, etc via the AMG.

Example: Start the carrier engine from the
superstructure for outrigger operation.
Engine rpm, coolant temp, Example: Activate emergency shift program for the
engine distress, etc. transmission.
