Five popular German Dishes

~Swapnanil Saha

Germany has a rich and diverse food culture that changes from region to region. Germany has only
been a unified country since 1871 (and was reformed again in 1990) which makes it hard to say any
food is actually German. However, there are lots of similarities and consistencies which make
German food recognisable and tie all of the different region’s delicacies together.

A few popular food items used all over Germany are:

1) Brot (Bread)

Bread, in the form of a loaf (Brot), is an important part of the cuisine, which is eaten all over
the country and served with most German dishes. Bread is enjoyed with most meals,
especially breakfast and dinner, but also at lunch (usually considered the main meal of the
day), which will often be served with rolls on the side.
2) Schnitzel

A Schnitzel is made by tenderizing a piece of meat (such as chicken, beef or pork) and then
covering it in egg, flour, and breadcrumbs before frying it in oil. Very similar to a French
escalope, the Schnitzel actually originated in Austria.

3) Pretzel

Great to eat as a side dish or snack, the pretzel is a type of baked pastry that is made from
dough commonly shaped into a knot. A Pretzel is usually sprinkled with salt, however, other
seasonings include cheese, sugar, chocolate, cinnamon, and different seeds.
4) Bratwurst

Bratwurst is likely the most popular German wurst and is made from pork, beef, marjoram,
caraway, garlic, and many other spices. These large sausages are usually grilled and served
with a roll and sweet German mustard, but they’re also known as the perfect biergarten
food, where they’re cooked in beer and served with potatoes and red cabbage.

5) Currywurst

Currywurst is sold from stalls and fast food eateries in many towns and cities, and if you
want to know what food the capital city Berlin is famous for, you will quickly discover that it
is Currywurst.
