MYP Personal Project - Let’s Get to Know the Daisy Family!

Criterion A: Planning

My Learning Goal
The learning goal for my personal project is to introduce the Asteraceae, the Daisy Family, to
people. Not many people may know the Asteraceae family, although it is the largest family of
flowering plants. Some people might know each of the species but not in a very detailed
knowledge.
This project is personal to me because of my admiration for flowers since I started to learn about
plants during elementary school. I tend to find beauty in flowers and was always curious about
what lay behind its interior and exterior beauty. Does the structure of the flowers have their own
benefits? Can all of the flowers be eaten raw? Or maybe make it a ‘flower juice’? Do the flowers
just want people to admire its own beauty without knowing the pros and cons behind it?
I used to gather almost all of the flowers that I found while accompanied my mother gardening.
Most of it are wild flowers that you usually found by the road, on some random plants, etc. Some
of the times I would cut the flowers into half just to end my curiousity on what is inside it.
In this case, I would like to conduct some research on flowers and use my creativity to share the
results of my research with others.
According to some articles that I randomly found; the population of bees were starting to decline
in 2021. Bees are one of the pollinators that help the flowers to grow and bloom. They are at risk
of extinction, largely due to human activities. I was wondering if the pollinators stop declining
and decreasing, there will be less flowers that are going to extinct. Thus, the flowers will be able
to showcase their beauty to the nature and the whole world will be less dull if there are more
flowers growing. In this situation, I would like to ensure the population of bees is under control
by adding this issue to my personal project and make people realize how this small matter could
affect the whole nature.
(In order to attract more people, I’ll make a mini brochure about this issue during my personal
project exhibition and give it to people that watch my presentation)

Product Goal
For the product of my personal project, I would like to produce a scrapbook that contains the
outcome of my research. Each page of the scrapbook will be filled with a lot of amazing contents
that are related to my learning goals. The design of the scrapbook may be simple; however, it can
attract people to understand the contents. Based on my product, I hope that people will be
encouraged to extend their creativity by looking at my scrapbook and thinking that nothing is
impossible.
I hope that I will learn some new skills in order to achieve my learning goal; such that research
skill. Surfing the internet may not be the only way to make some research on a topic, however
we can get a lot of information in it without having to spend money on car fuel to go to the
library. To get a specific information about a certain topic, it also requires a bit amount of
knowledge and some hard works so the information that we get is precise and accurate.

Product Success Criteria

My criteria created for my project, including the necessary information that I thought would
conclude my success in my product, hence making me set up challenging tasks so I could feel
successful and challenged by my product. I wanted to think about things that were important for
my product to be successful and less complicated.
My criteria were to raise people's awareness of how flowers can affect the environment and to
educate them on how to prevent bee populations from declining. With all of the results of my
research, I hope people will be able to acknowledge the relation between flowers and bees, and
what will happen to the nature if the bees are declining each year.

Research:

Plan for Achieving the Product

I created two separate timelines for the project, one being a general timeline for the entire project
and all its due dates, and the second being a product specific one. The general timeline is more of
a weekly/monthly planner that will just give me a general understanding of what I am supposed
to be working on, while the product specific timeline was created to plan out each step of my
creation process up until May. I set up task lists or ‘to do’ lists for each deadline to ensure that I
could complete everything I planned by the due date. While creating my plan, I was careful to
consider my product criteria, to ensure that I focused on the specific requirements I had set
myself. I found it easier to do this by adding a column to my plan which reminded me which
criteria was being addressed.
