FALL 2022 – CHE 206

QUIZ # 4 key

Question 1:
Briefly define Cv and Cp and write down their mathematical expressions.
(4 points)
Cv: constant volume heat capacity is the amount of heat energy absorbed/released (per
unit mass) of a substance in a constant volume process.
Cv= (dH/dT)v

Cp: specific heat at constant pressure is the heat energy required to raise the temperature
of a substance (per unit mass) by one degree Celsius in a constant pressure process.
Cp= (dH/dT)p

Question 2: (2 points)
FALL 2022 – CHE 206
QUIZ # 4 key

Question 3: (4 points)
While spending a hot summer day at the beach, you noticed that the sand
feels much warmer than the water. Explain why do the temperatures of
water and sand feel different? (Relate your answer to Cp).

Specific heat is the key. Specific heat is how much heat energy is needed raise the
temperature of a substance. Water has a very high specific heat. That means it
needs to absorb a lot of energy before its temperature changes. Sand, on the other
hand, has a lower specific heat which means its temperatures changes more
quickly.
