Different Scales Used in Measuring Temperature
● Celsius (ºC)-(Anders Celsius)- at standard atmospheric pressure (SAP), the freezing point of water is 0° and
the boiling point is 100ºC.
● Fahrenheit (°F)–(Daniel Fahrenheit)- in Fahrenheit scale,water freezes at 32° F and boils at 212ºF

● Kelvin (K) –( William Thomson Kelvin)-This scale is also known as the absolute value scale.Absolute zero
or K is equal to 273°C .The freezing point and boiling point of water are 273 K and 373 K ,respectively.
● Rankine (ºR)-(William J.M.Rankine)-separates the freezing point and boiling point of water at 491.67° R
and 671.67 º R , respectively
Conversion of Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = 5/9 (°F) -32
Example: The normal body temperature is 98.6°F. What is this temperature in °C?
Given: 98.6°F
Find: °C
Formula: °C = 5/9 (F) -32 or 5/9 = 0.56 (in decimal)
Solution: °C= 5/9 (98.6°F-32 ) or 0.56 (98.6 – 32)

Final answer: 37.30°C 37ºC

1. Conversion of Celsius (°C) to Fahrenheit: °F = 9/5 (C) + 32
Example: Boiling point of water is 100°C. What is the equivalent scale of it in °F?
Given: 100°C
Find: °F
Formula: °F = 9/5 (°C) + 32 ; 9/5 = 1.8 (in decimal)
Solution: °F= (9/5 100°C) + 32 or (1.8 x 100) + 32
Final answer: 212°F
2. Conversion of Celsius (°C) to Kelvin (K): K= °C + 273
Example: In the Celsius thermometer, water freezes at 0°C. Convert it to Kelvin.
Given: 0°C
Find: K
Formula: K= °C + 273
Solution: K= 0°C + 273
Final Answer: 273 K
