SCIENCE- HEAT AND ITS EFFECTS HOME WORK

QC
1) List 4 effects that heat produces.
Ans)
1. Raises the temperature.
2. Increases volume.
3. Change’s state.
4. Brings about chemical action.
5) What do you mean by upper fixed point
Ans) The upper fixed point, or steam point, is the temperature of
pure boiling water at normal atmospheric pressure.

QD)
2)Give one example of expansion on heating being put to good use
Ans) Automatic fire alarm is an example of expansion on heating,
which is put to good use. The fire alarm works on the principle that
different solids expand differently when heated. An automatic fire
alarm consists of a bimetallic strip which have two different metals
strips, iron and brass, bolted together firmly.
3)Explain why gas expands more than solids and liquids.
Ans) Molecules within gases are further apart and weakly attracted
to each other. Heat causes the molecules to move faster, heat
energy is converted to kinetic energy which means that the volume
of a gas increases more than the volume of a solid or liquid.

5)Expansion on heating can be a nuisance. Give 2 examples

Ans)
1)This may cause derailment of trains which travel on the track. This
can be prevented by leaving small space between successive rails.
2) Due to high temperature in hot summer, cement floors or walls
may give cracks.
6) Convert 25 Celsius into Fahrenheit and 86 Fahrenheit into Celsius
Ans)
1) 25°C to Fahrenheit
F = 9/5 × C + 32
F = 9/5 × 25 + 32
F = 225 / 5 + 32
F = 45 + 32
F = 77

2) 86°F into Celsius

F = 9/5 × C + 32
5F/9 = C + 32
5(86)/9 = C + 32
430 / 9 = C + 32
430/9 - 32 = C
186.8 = C

7) Calculate the temperature at which reading the Fahrenheit scale is

double the reading on the Celsius.
Ans) Relation between Fahrenheit scale and Celsius Scale
F=59C+32 ........(i)

Step2: Applying Given condition

2C=F (given) .........(ii)
∴2C=59C+32 .......(from (i) & (ii))
∴0.2C=32
∴C=16×10
∴C=160oC
Hence at 160oC Fahrenheit scale reading is double & Celsius scale
reading.

HOTS
1) You are planning to go to a very cold place where the night
temperature drops to -50 degrees Celsius which thermometer will
you take, Celsius or Fahrenheit? And why?
Ans) You like to take the mercury thermometer because it has a very
low freezing point. If you take the alcohol thermometer the alcohol
inside the thermometer will freeze and won’t be able to measure
the temperature.
4)Why is a laboratory thermometer not used to measure body
temperature?
Ans) A laboratory thermometer cannot be used to measure the
human body temperature. This is because as soon as we take out the
bulb of the laboratory thermometer from our mouth, the level of
mercury in its tube will start falling quickly. This will give a wrong
value of the body temperature.
