"Brigada Eskwela at SDO Catanduanes: Uniting Communities for the Island’s Resilient

Education"
Education is often hailed as a nation's most valuable investment, serving as the bedrock upon
which societies thrive. With the aim of fortifying this foundation, the Department of
Education (DepEd) launched the annual "Brigada Eskwela" initiative. This feature explores
the significance of this program and highlights the remarkable success achieved by the
education partners in SDO Catanduanes.
The Power of Brigada Eskwela
Brigada Eskwela, initially established in 2003, seeks to bridge resource gaps faced by the
Department of Education. By fostering partnerships between public schools, local
communities, and organizations from both public and private sectors, the program addresses
minor to medium repairs in preparation for the new academic year. Its positive impact
prompted its institutionalization through DepEd's Department Order (DO) No. 24 s. 2008,
making it an integral part of the school calendar nationwide.
An Evolving Program
In 2022, Brigada Eskwela took on the theme "Brigada Eskwela: Tugon sa Hamon ng Ligtas
na Balik-Aral," emphasizing three crucial components. Firstly, "Brigada Eskwela sa
Paghahanda" focused on preparing schools for face-to-face classes. Secondly, "Brigada
Eskwela Plus" aimed to enhance learner participation, reduce dropouts, and improve
education quality. Lastly, "Brigada Pagbasa" introduced an after-school reading remediation
program to cultivate a culture of reading among students.
SDO Catanduanes Leading the Way
The Brigada Eskwela in SDO Catanduanes enthusiastically kicked off at the Virac Pilot
Elementary School, Virac North District. Education partners, from government officials to
NGOs, showed unwavering support for the cause. Their inspiring messages boosted the
morale of DepEd personnel, ensuring the continuation of quality education despite the
challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Triumph in Unity
From August 1 to 26, 2022, the collective efforts of SDO Catanduanes and its partners
proved to be a resounding success. The unwavering generosity and support from various
sectors, including local government officials, civic groups, parents, and volunteers, played a
pivotal role. The community's unity generated an astounding amount of ₱147,017,891.87,
along with the dedication of 119,365 volunteers who contributed 363,000 man-hours for
physical maintenance and clean-up. Additionally, 38,810.5 man-hours were dedicated to the
Brigada Pagbasa program, highlighting the community's commitment to fostering literacy.
Brigada Eskwela stands as a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and
community engagement in education. SDO Catanduanes' outstanding achievements serve as
an inspiration, demonstrating that, as Catandunganons, they can overcome any adversity
with the collective support and determination of their community. By investing in education
and embracing initiatives like Brigada Eskwela, a brighter future awaits not only
Catanduanes but for the entire nation.
