Sample writing 1: Write a paragraph to describe a close friend of yours.

Jacques has been my close friend for two years. I first met him on a school exchange trip
to Calais, France. He is quite good-looking. He is tall and slim, with olive skin and curly
dark hair. Like many French people, he has a great sense of style, so he always looks well-
dressed even in casual clothes. Jacques is very outgoing. He is always friendly and loves
to have fun. He has got a fantastic sense of humour and he always makes me laugh.
However, he can be a bit immature at times. For example, when he doesn't get what he
wants, he acts childishly and stamps his feet. Jacques is very keen on water sports. He likes
sailing and he spends a lot of time on his boat. He enjoys scuba diving, too, and loves
exploring life under sea. All in all, I'm glad to have Hacques as my friend. It's a pleasure
to be with him and I really enjoy his company. I'm sure we'll always be close friends.

this event very clearly. On the final day of my 9-grade years at secondary school, my father
gave me VND 500,000 for the good grades I had scored in my final exam. To enjoy it, I
invited some of my closest friends to a restaurant for a meal. At the restaurant, I asked my
friends to order as much as they liked. The food was delicious, and we began to eat. We
ate, talked and laughed at the jokes we made in school. After we had finished our food, the
waiter brought us the bill. I opened my purse to take out the money. To my surprise, I found
my money missing. Only then I realized that I had left the money at home. I wanted to
borrow the money from my friends, but they had brought only enough money for bus fare.
I told the waiter and he lent me his phone to call my sister and told her to bring the money
to the restaurant. Ever since that day I have stopped coming near that restaurant because I
am afraid that some of the waiters might recognize my face.

Sample writing 5: Some students prefer to study alone. Others prefer to study with
a group of students. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to
support your answer.
Maybe someone will choose to study with a group of students, and they can give you sound
reasons for their choice. From point of view, self-studying is much better because I am sure
that studying alone will offer you silence, freedom and enough choice, which is
indispensable for a student. First, when you study alone, you will not be abstracted by the
sound made by other students from your study. Second, many people have their own study
styles. Some want to have something to eat when he is studying, some want to lie down
with a book in his hand, while still some want to study without anything doing. Third,
studying alone, you have enough choice as you want to do. You can have your media
playing, you can open the window, also, you can sing your song when you are in a high
spirit. That is great. I always sing a good song when I solve a difficult problem and to think
that nobody will criticise you for making noise is a lovely experience. So, may there some
problems for studying alone, I strongly believe it will bring more advantages.

Sample writing 6: English is a compulsory and very challenging subject at school.

Write a paragraph to suggest ways of improving English learning.
English is a difficult subject, so each person has to find the suitable way in order to study
it efficiently. I had discovered some of my own secret to learn it, and I had a big
improvement since then. Firstly, one of my hobbies is reading, and I choose English books
to read in order to improve both my vocabulary and grammar. I read about the history,
culture of England and the United States, novels of famous authors, and English news, all
of them help me to gain a lot of new words as well as general knowledge. Secondly, I listen
to English songs, watch English movies and try to translate the lyrics as well as the subtitle.
By doing that, I know more about the different and the same things between English and
Vietnamese, and it helps me to use English properly in each certain situation. I feel that I
have made more positive changes since I had my very own ways to learn English, and that
is the reason why I think each of us should be creative in learning it.

Sample writing 7: Write a letter of complaint to a restaurant/hotel manager to

complain about poor service or food.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the bad meal and service that my friends
and I had at your restaurant last Sunday night.
First of all, although we had booked an outdoor table, a waiter gave us an indoor table by
the toilets. He even asked us to leave early as the table had been reserved by another
customer. Secondly, the service was very slow as we had to wait for nearly 30 minutes to
be served. When the meal finally arrived, the chicken soup and the fried fish were already
cold. Finally, when the bill came, we found a mistake on it. We were also overcharged for
soft drinks. Unacceptable treatment at your restaurant made us extremely disappointed.
I would like to receive your explanation and apology for these matters. I would also suggest
that you spend more time training your customer care staffs to prevent these unfortunate
incidents from occurring to other customers.
I look forward to receiving your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Sample writing 8:
This is part of a letter you receive from your pen friend James.
“What’s your favorite kind of music? Do you play an instrument?”
Now write a letter, answering your pen friend’s questions. In your next letter, please
tell me about the music you like.
Dear James,
Thank you for your letter, which came yesterday. It’s always good to hear from you.
I play the guitar quite a lot. I am not very good, but I enjoy it. I often go to my friend's
house and we play together. I don't go to many concerts as I live in a small town and not
many bands come here. At parties we often dance, and I like that! I like rock and roll music
best. I listen to a lot of music on my mp3 player. I have usually got it with me.
What about you? Do you play an instrument?

RECOMMENDED WRITING TOPICS

Sample writing 9: Write about a trip to the countryside you ever made.
Last summer I went with my family to visit my grandparents in the countryside. I got up
very early that morning. After breakfast, we caught a bus there. On the road, we saw many
tall trees, beautiful houses and people. What a lovely sight! It took us about 20 minutes to
reach there. After visiting my grandparents, in the afternoon, we went around to enjoy the
beauty of the countryside. The air was fresh and cool there. There were a lot of fruits such
as durians, plums, mangoes, etc. Especially, durians are very delicious. In the evening, we
went for a walk on the mountain nearby. The sights there were wonderful. Finally, it was
time for us to go home. We came home at about 6:00 PM. I felt happy and enjoyed that
trip very much. I hope I will (have a chance to) come back there again next year.
Sample writing 10: Should the students wear uniforms at school? Do you agree or
disagree? Write about your opinion and give specific examples to support your ideas.
I think it is necessary for secondary students to wear uniforms when they are at school
because of the following reasons. Firstly, wearing uniforms encourages students to be
proud of being students of their school because they are wearing the uniforms with labels
bearing their school’s name. Secondly, wearing uniforms helps students feel equal in many
ways, whether they are rich or poor. Finally, wearing uniforms is practical. We do not have
to think of what to wear every day. Therefore, students in secondary schools should wear
uniform.
Sample writing 11: Should the students wear casual clothes at school? Do you agree
or disagree? Write about your opinion and give specific examples to support your
ideas.
I think it’s necessary for secondary students to wear casual clothes when they are at school
because of the following reasons. Firstly, wearing casual clothes make students feel
comfortable. It is easy for them to travel. Secondly, wearing casual clothes gives students
freedom of choice about size, colors and fashion. Finally, wearing casual clothes makes

Sample writing 17: Fish catching with electricity in your neighborhood is so
problematic. Write a complaint letter about fish catching with electricity.
Dear Mr. President,
I am writing to you about the problem of fish catching in the lake behind my house.
These days, there have been a lot of people coming here to catch the fish. The problem is
that they use electricity to catch fish. This way, I think, is very dangerous. Right now, if
you come here, you realize a lot of fish, small or big, are floating on the surface of the lake.
Not only fish but even some other animals such as frogs, toads, and small birds are killed
by electric shock waves as well.
I would suggest that you should prohibit people from catching fish here. If not, I am afraid
all of the fish in the lake are not going to exist in the near future.
I look forward to seeing your resolution to this important matter.
Yours sincerely,
Sample writing 18: Write about the necessities of solar energy.
Solar energy is an alternative energy. This power could be provided by the sun. One
percent of the solar energy that reaches the Earth is enough to provide power for the total
population. Many countries are already using solar energy. Solar panels are placed on the
roof of a house to take that energy. The energy can be stored for a number of days, so on
cloudy days you can use solar energy too. We can use solar energy to heat water or to

or mom.
Dear James,
This morning I learned a lesson about Mother’s Day. It was really interesting. In Vietnam,
however, people do not celebrate Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. In my opinion, It’s
necessary to have a day to celebrate for mom and another for dad.
There are many reasons to celebrate these days. Firstly, there will be a special day for
children to express their feelings and their love to their parents. Secondly, we’ll have an
opportunity to enhance family traditions as well as a chance bring our family members
closer.
In my opinion, Sunday is the most suitable day for celebration because people are free on
Sunday. It will be interesting to have a big lunch or dinner. On this occasion, children can
give special gifts to their moms or dads. They can also cook on this day.
I think my idea will be supported. I hope Mother’s Day and Father’s Day will be celebrated
nationwide someday.
Best regards,

Sample writing 23: Write about the changes that information technology brings to
your life.
Over the last two decades, information technology has been responsible for creating
amazing resources which put all the information we need right at our fingertips and has
dramatically changed our day-to-day lives. The first change is that information technology
has killed the greeting cards because we are now using an e-card or email to greet others.
The next change I want to mention is that teenagers now tend to use the internet to prepare
an online dating with strangers they have never met yet. The way of sharing information is
also changed. Social networks like internet or Smartphone now allow us to share
information anytime and anywhere. Then information technology also changes the way we
relax. These days, people often spend their free time watching TV, connecting Facebook

and laughed at the jokes we made in school. After we had finished our food, the waiter
brought us the bill. I opened my purse to take out the money. To my surprise, I found my
money missing. Only then I realized that I had left the money at home. I wanted to borrow
the money from my friends, but they had brought only enough money for bus fare. I told

can lead to obesity, backache, and short-sightedness. Besides, people paying too much

disagree with this idea. First of all, In know some people who are very successful in their
careers don't have a lot of money but they know what they are good at and get to show their

when working. It means that they have motivation to work every day. What's more, a
successful career also has its own true value which is very important to everyone. For
instance, a volunteer to finance a charity campaign is considered to have a successful career
although he doesn't get a high salary. To conclude, a successful career is not necessarily
defined as a high-paying job but it depends on the way we think about it.

Sample writing 31: Some universities require students to take the entrance
examination with the English subject. Other universities do not. Which is better? Use
specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
In my opinion, it is better if high schools in VN require students to take the entrance
examination with the English subject because E is an international language which is very
useful in many fields. First of all, university students are the ones who have many good
opportunities to get good jobs which often enquire E knowledge. E is the main language
used in business, international contracts, and so on. Therefore, knowing E is the key to
success of many students in the future. What's more, there are over 700 million people
speak E as their native or second language, so students have to know E to communicate
with foreigners to overcome all communication barrier and get success. Additionally,
knowing E gives students chances to get access to knowledge like the Internet because the

skill for students to enrich their knowledge. To summarize, it is necessary for universities

Sample writing 32: Write a paragraph to discuss about the idea “Should Facebook be
banned?”
No matter how popular Facebook is with its users worldwide, I strongly believe it should
be banned. The first reason to support this ban is Facebook has many negative impacts on
the study of a lot of students. Many pupils use Facebook in class. It will distract their
attention from more important things that teachers give them. This is the main reason why
students nowadays usually get bad grades in tests. The second reason is that Facebook is
very addictive. Some people check Facebook all the time without working, exercising,
playing sports, etc. They even do not talk to their friends although they are very close.
Consequently, they lose both health and many relations. Finally, using Facebook regularly
will make you inactive. When you go with a group of friends, they will feel extremely
exhausted as you always look at your phone to check Facebook. You will be lazy of joining
in activities, and the result is you will become introverted. Without a doubt, Facebook
should be banned, for it has more useless thing than useful thing.

Coming to Vietnam, foreign visitors can’t forget the ancient town of Hoi An, 30 km south
of Da Nang, lying on the banks of the Thu Bon River. Occupied by early western traders,
Hoi An was one of the major trading centers of Southeast Asia in the 16th century. Hoi An
has a distinct Chinese atmosphere with low, tile-roofed houses and narrow streets; the
original structure of some of these streets still remains almost intact. All the houses were
made of rare wood, decorated with lacquered boards and panels engraved with Chinese
characters. Pillars were also carved with ornamental designs. There is no shortage of bacon
