VII. ASSIGNMENT:

ESSAY. Answer the question comprehensively. Avoid copy paste answer.

1. Define the term "history" in your own words. Is it necessary to study it? What impact does it have on a
man's life after learning about his past?
-In my own words, "history" refers to the study and understanding of past events, people,
societies, and cultures. It involves examining and interpreting various sources of information to gain
insights into the experiences, achievements, and challenges of those who came before us.

The impact of studying history on an individual's life is significant. Firstly, it helps develop critical
thinking and analytical skills. History requires us to analyze and evaluate various sources of information,
consider different perspectives, and draw conclusions based on evidence. These skills are valuable not
only in academic pursuits but also in many other aspects of life, such as problem-solving, decision-
making, and understanding complex issues.

Why was the Code of Kalantiaw considered hoax in Philippine History? Are there primary or

secondary sources used to prove this as hoax? Justify your answers using internal and external criticism.
(20 points)

-The Code of Kalantiaw refers to a supposed legal code attributed to Datu Kalantiaw, a pre-
colonial ruler in the Philippines. It was initially presented as an ancient document regulating the legal
system and social order in the region before Spanish colonization. However, the Code of Kalantiaw is
widely regarded as a hoax in Philippine history.

There are several reasons why the Code of Kalantiaw is considered a hoax:
1. Lack of primary sources: No original manuscript or physical evidence of the Code of Kalantiaw
has ever been found. It exists solely as a text presented by José E. Marco, a Filipino historian, in the early
20th century. The absence of primary sources that can be independently verified raises doubts about its
authenticity.

2. Historical anachronisms: The content and language of the Code of Kalantiaw contain
anachronisms and inconsistencies that are not aligned with the pre-colonial era in the Philippines. It
includes references to institutions, customs, and technologies that did not exist during that time.

3. Contradictions with other historical records: The provisions outlined in the Code of Kalantiaw
contradict the documented legal systems and practices of pre-colonial Philippine societies as described
by other reputable historical sources. These discrepancies further undermine its credibility.

4. Lack of external corroboration: The Code of Kalantiaw is not mentioned in any Spanish colonial
records or accounts, despite the fact that Spanish colonizers meticulously documented their encounters
and observations of Philippine indigenous cultures and societies.

Given these reasons, historians and scholars have widely dismissed the Code of Kalantiaw as a
fabrication or hoax. The lack of primary sources, historical anachronisms, contradictions with other
records, and absence of external corroboration all contribute to the skepticism surrounding its
authenticity. Instead, historians rely on verified primary and secondary sources to understand the legal
systems and social order of pre-colonial Philippine societies.

C. Reflective Writing. (Synchronous Assessment through MS Teams Platform)

Why do we need to restudy our history using Philippine historiography? Does it help in making the image
of Filipinos better? Justify your answer. (20 points)

Restudying our history using Philippine historiography is important for several reasons, and it can
indeed contribute to improving the image of Filipinos. Here are the justifications for this claim:

1. Decolonizing Perspective: Philippine historiography offers a decolonizing perspective that

challenges the dominant narrative imposed by colonial powers. It allows us to reclaim our history and
present it from the perspective of the Filipino people. This helps counter colonial biases and provides a
more accurate and nuanced understanding of our past.

2. Uncovering Hidden Narratives: Philippine historiography seeks to uncover marginalized voices,

experiences, and events that were often overlooked or omitted in traditional historical accounts. By
bringing these narratives to light, it promotes inclusivity and highlights the contributions of various
groups, such as indigenous peoples, women, and other marginalized communities. This broadens our
understanding of Filipino history and promotes a more comprehensive and inclusive image of Filipinos.

3. Recognizing Agency and Resistance: Philippine historiography emphasizes the agency and
resistance of Filipinos against colonial oppression and other forms of injustice. It showcases the
resilience, bravery, and efforts of Filipinos in shaping their own destiny and striving for independence. By
highlighting these aspects, it portrays Filipinos as active agents in their history and challenges the
perception of Filipinos as passive subjects of colonization.

4. Engendering National Identity: Restudying history through Philippine historiography helps in

shaping and nurturing a strong national identity. By understanding the struggles, achievements, and
values that have shaped the Filipino nation, individuals can develop a sense of pride, belonging, and
shared purpose. This positive self-image can contribute to a better image of Filipinos both internally and
externally.

5. Inspiring Empowerment and Social Change: Philippine historiography not only informs but also
inspires. It showcases stories of heroism, social movements, and transformative moments in Philippine
history that can inspire individuals to take action and work towards positive social change. By knowing
and internalizing these stories, individuals are empowered to contribute to the betterment of society,
fostering a positive image of Filipinos as proactive agents of progress.

In conclusion, restudying our history using Philippine historiography is crucial as it offers a

decolonizing perspective, uncovers hidden narratives, recognizes agency and resistance, engenders
national identity, inspires empowerment and social change, fosters cultural appreciation, and corrects
misconceptions and stereotypes. By presenting a more accurate and inclusive image of Filipinos, it
contributes to a better understanding and appreciation of our culture, history, and people, both within
the Philippines and internationally.
