Case study – Client’s Profile

Situation:
Richard, 41, and Amy, 38, have been married for more than 15 years and they now
have 4 young children. Recently, Amy found out that Richard had an affair with
another woman 15 years ago, soon after they got married. Richard even denied
having an affair in one of their counseling sessions and said that the issue was just
centered around Amy not having the willingness to trust him. Over time, poor
communication between them resulted in them both not understanding their
emotional wants, desires, and overall needs and one of the key areas identified by
both was the lack of trust in their marriage. At first, Amy was hesitating about
divorcing Richard as it would lead to them selling their home and other
belongings, having less money, Amy being alone, and their children not having a
father to grow up with, but in the end, Amy eventually decided that she wants to
save her marriage as long as Richard won’t have an affair anymore and that he
won’t lie anymore.
1. What is your opinion on Amy and Richard’s situation?
2. What do you think is the best approach to address this problem?
3. How do you think can Amy achieve her goal of saving their marriage?
4. What advice would you give to Amy if you were her counselor?
a. Would you rather have her divorce her husband or save her marriage?
b. Which decision do you think is better among the two?
