“Teaching Strategies and Approaches for Pupils with special educational Needs:
a scoping study”
Research Report No 516
By: Lani Florian and Pauline Davis

The research paper “Teaching Strategies and Approaches for Pupils with special
educational Needs: a scoping study” by Lani Florian and Pauline Davis, aims to find out the
best teaching method that an educator could use with the different profiles of students based
on the theoretical perspective of teaching and learning.
It also aims to find out how effective the strategies used in the achievement of those
students.
In the author’s Principal theoretic perspective located on page 9, there discuss the
different types of models that we could use for the learning of these students. Those models
state the advantages and disadvantages of each model and I have come to the idea that by
learning the strength and weaknesses of those models I can weigh what appropriate model
could I use for a child with a certain type of special needs. For instance, if I have a student
with EBD that likes to participate more and is active, I can use the constructivist model to
open more opportunities for the child to gain more knowledge. On the other hand, if I have a
student who doesn’t like to participate and finds being active, a stress, I can use the
behavioral models.
After some of the different perspectives were introduced, the author presented the
different kinds of children with special needs. There, we will realize that it is important to
learn which category of special needs a child will fall under since this will determine what are
interventions and accommodations a child should undergo such as Children with speech,
language, and communication needs (SLCN). Where Dockrell and Lindsay stated in their
literature that
"those children are unable to express themselves in the normal effortless way as their peers, and where the
difficulty cannot be attributed to physical or sensory impairments.”

Knowing the learners’ profiles and background allows us to know how to work with
the learners’ problem area leading us to the accommodation on that aspect by using different
kinds of models such as behavioral; which according to the article is the methods associated
with this perspective usually involve imitation, shaping, rehearsal reinforcement, usually task
or skill specific, cognitive; focuses on using and developing basic cognitive processes to
improve skills in information storage, processing, organizing, and retrieval, developmental;
involves an analysis of the developmental stages through which a child is believed to pass,
and interactionist; emphasizes the development of meaningful relationships with the child’s
environment, instead of the teaching of skills in isolation.
On the other hand, the journal highlighted that inclusion is not enough on educating
these students with special needs rather there must be a relocation of some learners that
shows severe misbehaviors. Despite the emphasis on inclusion in learners with special needs,
there should be a provision of something different in a separate place that will accommodate
the needs of the learner.
Meanwhile, these are some of the strategies that were stated in the journal:

I agree with the author since these strategies are essential for the development of
these learners such as the collaborative partnership of the teacher and the parent. It is
understandable that in order to accommodate the learner, the teacher must know how the
child behaves at home. By that, the teacher can determine if the behavior was only triggered
in the school or also at the house. The teacher can monitor the learner in the school and the
parent will monitor the child at home. This will result in effective differentiated instruction
on the learners’ curriculum and will have an effective intervention. Higher success in
assessments will be expected.
(Reflection and Conclusion)
Overall, the author might be introducing the types of learners, principal theoretic
perspective, models, strategies and etc. but there is still a quiet lack of information which is
the legal foundations a learner must undergo. I haven’t read of those foundations which is an
important aspect in teaching and assessing the learner with special needs. Though, it is
expected since the study of the author is focusing on the strategies used for the learner, as for
me, including the legal basis will also broaden the strategies since by having and knowing the
legal bases and foundations, the learner, parent, and teacher will know what are the rights of

the child thus they will know how the institution will help them in some aspects especially
that it is harder to assess students with EBD and it really needs the help of the institution to
find out how can we help the learner when the learner can’t express his feelings into words.
Take this as an example:

In discussing strategies and approaches, history must also be known. Which has only
a slight exposure in the study. It has a big contribution to how can we assess the student’s
behavior effectively. There are some questions such as “How does the past assess this kind
of behavior?” “Does this strategy work in the past?” “What strategies should and I can
enhance more based on the past studies?” “How does the past approach these students?”.
By answering those questions, and the other questions prior to the issue that was not stated
above, one will know how effective the strategy will be in applying to the learner.
Lastly, you will understand why the learner was behaving in such a way and how to
assess a child with communication difficulty upon learning his medical background. Thus, it
is important that as a future educator, I will have a knowledge of the learners’ medication and
medical background for the reason that this will help me identify what are the things I must
avoid, what I must do, and what accommodations I will use prior to the learning of my
learner. Take for instance how the study stated the distinction between SEBD and ADHD.

Come to think of it, both may be having a similarity where the learner is having
trouble prior to handling his emotions but upon checking the medical background, these two
are different categories thus these two must have different strategies applied to it.
In spite of all that has been said, those strategies gave me an idea of how I will handle
a situation if I will be given a chance to educate a student with special needs. I also come up
with an idea of the things I must consider and what I must know about dealing with these
students. Like, if one is misbehaving, there are ways to find out if the learner’s action is
normal or if the learner needs attention. By this, I knew the importance of knowing the legal

foundations to cater to the unique educational needs of the child. The history that will give
me the background of the disorder. The medications that will give me an idea of how the
disorder works and what may be the possible triggers. All of these information will make me
an effective educator in the future that will help the learner in his development.
