Christopher Nolan Auteur

By Brodie Thompson
Technical Competence
• Nolan started off in 1989 with his
short film Tarantella but he didn’t
get into feature film making until
1998 with ”Following”, but didn’t
get much fame till Batman Begins
in 2005
• In 2008 Nolan was the first
Director to use IMAX Cameras in
a Hollywood Blockbuster in his
highest rated movie yet: The
Dark Knight
Distinguishable Personality
• Nolan prefers Film instead of Digital Cameras, to the extent
that the editing process was not made on any Digital Editing
Software (except for when using timecode cutting and grading
for DCPs) but old ways like Photochemical
• Nolan would also stray away from CGI as much as possible for
example, Tenet Plane Crash used an actual plane, TDK Lorry
flip they actually flipped a lorry and used vfx to get rid of the
pole that flipped over the lorry
• Though he doesn’t use CGI that much, when he uses it like in
Interstellar, he would make his own editing software for the
film plus that clip was rendering at 100 hours per frame.
• His movies also have more of a dark tone than other movies,
e.g. Dunkirk having people stuck on an island that Germans He even accurately predicted
are bombing to get rid of them. The Dark Knight having Joker what an actual black hole would
as an actual scary antagonist rather than a joke. Interstellar look like
with a post apocalyptic environment in the future with
sandstorms and ruined crops.
