Introduction
Programmable logic circuits, also known as field-programmable gate arrays
(FPGAs), are digital electronic devices used to implement digital circuits that
can be reconfigured or modified as per the user's requirements. They are
commonly used in the design and implementation of digital signal processing
(DSP) systems, high-speed networking, image processing, and many other
applications that require high-performance digital circuits.
This paper will discuss extensively programmable logic circuits, including their
history, architecture, and design methodologies. It will also examine the
advantages and disadvantages of using programmable logic circuits over
traditional digital circuits, and finally, it will consider some applications of
programmable logic circuits.

History of Programmable Logic Circuits:


The first programmable logic circuit was introduced in the 1970s by a company
named Signetics. The device was called a Programmable Logic Array (PLA),
and it allowed the designer to program logic equations into the device. These
early devices were based on a technology called Mask Programmable Logic,
which meant that the devices were programmed once during fabrication, and the
design could not be changed afterward.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Programmable Logic

Introduction
